Is There Fresh Pasta and Italian Sausage In Heaven?

When Dom Deluise did a guest appearance on his son's show, Stargate: SG-1, I didn't know who he was; I only knew that he was brilliantly, goofily, enormously funny, and I was crazy about him and about the episode he starred in (he plays an unusually exasperating AI named Urgo, btw). A few weeks later, I was looking at our cookbook shelf and I noticed his name. I'd never seen it before, but we had a copy of his cookbook, titled Eat This...It'll Make You Feel Better.

I don't think I ever made any of the recipes out of his book; I'm not really that much of a fan of Italian food. But I read it cover to cover half a dozen times, and I still remember most of it, because it was just so, so... fond. It wasn't really a cookbook so much as a reminiscence of all the amazing people in his life, from his large extended family, to the Italian community he grew up in, to the actors and celebrities he knew from a long Hollywood career, to his wife and children; a celebration of his life and his memories and the people he cared about, punctuated by descriptions of delicious Italian food. For a guy who did some pretty silly comedies, his written sense of humor is very down to earth and friendly and genuine. I really, really loved that cookbook. And I really, really loved him.

Dom Deluise died in his sleep last night at the age of 75. May he rest in peace.
