But our passes were good for the whole week, so we tried again last night and it was awesome. I really missed the balloon fiesta while I was in California. I don't crew, and I never want to get up early enough to go to mass ascension, and it mucks traffic up all over town the whole week, but, idk. There is something familiarly pleasant in knowing that I can get up in the morning to a balloon accidentally landing in the yard. And the special shapes glow is the best. I saw an octopus balloon (that one was my favorite), and the Creamland Cow, and two bees with a baby bee, and a really lovely butterfly, and I got a trading card for the Spiderpig balloon. Fun times.

I also got a haircut this weekend, but no pictures of that. You can't really tell the difference anyway, I only got three or four inches taken off. But it feels a lot better!

comments

Back in that two year period in high school when it was just me, my mom, and my aunt's ex-girlfriend living in our house, we used to joke a lot about living in an artists' colony - between my mom's sewing, Lisa's jewelry making, and my whatever-caught-my-interest-that-week, we were a pretty crafty bunch. Not to mention that we were all very literary, political, loud, and close to each other: it really was like living in a very tiny girls-and-animals only commune (this was when we had two dogs, a cat, a rabbit and a bird in addition to the people in the house). Given the circumstances, it was pretty damn pleasant.

Today at my mom's gave me that kind of feeling again. We weren't doing anything much exciting, but it had that same kind of feeling of general usefulness and creative productivity that always makes me wish I could sustain an interest in a hobby for more than twenty minutes. We dyed my hair (the store didn't have pink in my brand stocked, so it's purple again, but it looks good), and then, since we had to let the dye sit for a few hours, we tried to find some small craft projects to keep us busy. I now have a new pair of silver leaf earrings and a claw necklace with a really kick-ass red-blue-and-black boxbraided cord. And two new hairsticks and a really neat hairtie with a metal spiral bobble on it.

And then after we rinsed the dye out we had to go get dinner, which turned into a bit of a nature walk (I really love where my mom's new apartment is, right on the edge of the village so it's all nature-y and green while still within walking distance of Whattaburger and Barnes & Noble). The pond across the street from her is full of ducks and little baby ducks, which are basically the cutest little balls of duck fluff I have ever seen. And one of the new boarders at the farm has a horse with a little filly - can't be a year old - that we fed cookies when we did the rounds saying hi to all the horses and the donkey.

I love these nice pleasant days that don't make me hate the entire universe. :D

comments

Things I Did Today With Hanjuuluver (OMG I AM SO GLAD TO TALK TO A PERSON I'M NOT RELATED TO, YOU HAVE NO IDEA):

1. Lunch at Flying Star (bestest cafe chain in the state) - they always have great food, and today was no exception. Big burgers with real, chewy delicious buns! Chicken pot pie as big as your head! MAC AND CHEESE OMG. And we were sitting right next to the counter where they display all the desserts, so of course we walked out of there with chocolate cheesecake. I'm amazed we managed to resist the temptation to buy a dozen giant cupcakes.

2. Shared a bunch of music, since Hanjuuluver shares my love of geektastic filk and is too computer-inept to download her own. There was also a lot of singing along to Doctor Horrible songs and songs about Canada, because we are awesome that way.

3. Our near death by bad cooking, because my dad left us to make dinner for ourselves. Our recipe, ginger-soy chicken, was not fail, but I was under the impression hanjuuluver could actually cook (MAYBE BECAUSE SHE TOLD ME) and did not need to be supervised, and this was not the case. As she proved when she took the lid off the rice to stir it five minutes in. Or when she took the partially cooked chicken off the stove because she forgot to chop it (and then couldn't handle non-deboned chicken, so I had to do it instead). I DO NOT APPROVE. If we all die of food poisoning, it is totally her fault.

4. Watched Due South! I think she got sick of listening to us rant at her about it, because she made me let her watch it. We rewatched the pilot movie, and then some random episodes from season 1 and 2 because I am missing most of the first season (I've seen it, I just didn't start saving it until the Victoria episodes). She is also of the opinion that Fraser and Ray are totally married and should just kiss already. And that Diefenbaker=win. She was an easy convert. :D

I've also been making a few new Torchwood icons (nothing from the Series That Never Happened, though) and working on the crossover. I've got the prologue finished, and the first chapter plotted out. Tomorrow I'm going to my mom's to hang out and get a haircut! And by haircut I mean a half-inch trimmed off the bottom which will be virtually indistinguishable to anyone else, not, you know, an actual haircut. Boy oh boy, my life is exciting.

comments

I did a craft! I made hairsticks, to be specific. I've been working on this intermittently since this weekend, and I finally have some finished products to show off.

( cut for a fuckton of pictures )

comments
