Not Really The Best of Days

It is very hard to imagine a more Monday-ish sort of Monday could exist. It is never a good start to the week when you you convince yourself, in that split-minute between your alarm going off and your brain going on that it is still Sunday and you can go back to sleep.

I didn't overslept, actually, but it was a jarring way to start the day. I barely made my bus, but on the way to work I had a minor obsessive freak-out because I couldn't remember if I'd left the stove on or not, and finally ended up texting my dad and asking him to drop by my apartment and check for me (not an incredible hardship, since his office is two blocks from my complex, but I still felt guilty). We were short-handed and utterly slammed at work, which is usual for a Monday but seemed much worse today, especially since I stayed up too late reading Thor fic and got distracted by immediate copy and only drank half my tea. I stayed ten minutes later than I meant to because I had to completely reformat a document and call a client, and I still felt like a horrible slacker for not staying late since we had so much left in pending (I wouldn't have been much use though, my brain was about to start bleeding through my eyes). While I was putting my bike on the rack on the bus, I got my handlebars stuck on my helmet.

Tomorrow I have to go to the housing office and tell them I've been seeing cockroaches in my apartment (NOT MY DAMN FAULT. I'm a little untidy, but that means I have a few boxes of books still sitting in my room and I sometimes wait two hours before doing the dinner dishes, I'm not that gross! I suspect my upstairs neighbors, or possibly just the horrendously dry weather. Whatever, it's slightly appalling either way). And I have to call the DMV and see if it's even possible for me to get a learner's permit since I'm over 21, or if the idea of a 23-year-old who doesn't know how to drive is so foreign to them that they expect me to just quietly muddle on until I'm ready to take my exam.

But in the meantime, I am at least done with work for the day. I have tofu and delicious homemade ciabatta in my kitchen. I shall eat and watch Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and plot out the ridiculous Avengers High School!AU that I am never going to write, because it is ridiculous (this is the one where they are all still superheroes, but teenagers, with Feelings, and Issues, and barely controlled super powers, and Black Widow is the scary but insanely hot goth girl and Steve is the star of the baseball team but still a dorky art class kid at heart and Thor has funny feelings about his freaky drama club step-brother Loki and Coulson, much to his chagrin, is the Feeney and sometimes they save the day from supervillains and sometimes they freak out about prom and finals and their fucked up families and sometimes they just punch each other and fail at talking about things. See? RIDICULOUS). And all will be well. Until I am eaten by cockroaches, anyway.

Another Con Well Spent

I am home, hanjuuluver is safely on the plane back to NM, and the con is over. D:

Since it was Halloween last night, the two of us decided that the thing to do would be to screen a few select episodes of Supernatural in our room, for our own entertainment and the entertainment of anyone on the third floor who noticed the sign on our door and stopped in. We watched Bloody Mary, Movie Monster, Ghostfacers, and the episode with the creepy soul-sucking changeling children, and spent the rest of the night terrified to look into any of the numerous large mirrors in our hotel room.

This morning/afternoon was the Small Fandoms panel (which lived up to its name by having five people show up), the Bishie Brunch, the Supernatural panel, and the Yaoi in Comics panel (which hanjuuluver talked me into going to because I was going to leave with her at 2.00). We sat with a nice group at the brunch and the eye candy was lovely - getting served by FFVII!Cid and a guy in black leather spanky pants more than made up for the light spread and the fact that I never got anything to drink. Also, I found out from one of the women at the table that yesterday's mystery anime with the guy in the red coat was Samurai 7, so now I'm watching that.

The Supernatural panel was the biggest panel I went to, and probably the most fun. Evenly split between the Sam/Dean and the Dean/Castiel groups - and me right in the middle liking both - and everyone agreeing that Bobby is the best ever. And a big chunk of it was devoted to fic recs and discussions of crackiest pairings ever. I think we won for Yellow-Eyed-Demon-possessed!Mary's dad/John Winchester. Fun times!

The Yaoi in Comics panel, like last year, was twenty minutes of Why Billy and Teddy Are The Cutest Canon Couple In the Universe, which I can hardly object to, twenty minutes of Why Everyone In The World Knew Northstar Was Gay Before He Was Outed, again much to my tastes, and then a free-for-all shouting match about whether Batman would bottom for Superman, why it sucks to be a Titan, and Daken sleeping his way through the MU. Also Robins! There was a Robin, a Deadpool, and three Wolverines in the room. So yeah, really glad I made the time to go to that.

And to cap it all off, I have pictures of the prints I bought yesterday! I'm still trying to figure out what to do with them - they are 8.5x11", which seems a bit small to hang on my walls, but I want to show them off. Whatever. Anyway, I got two prints by Jo Chen (hardest choice ever, her Runaways, Thor, and Buffy covers are gorgeous), and two pieces of fanart.

(no subject)

Success! I finally made a batch of bread in the bread machine that didn't have a crater in the top big enough to float a boat. Thank the gods for high altitude flour, which is making all the difference in the attractiveness of my baked goods. It did still fall, though, if not as badly as before, so I think next step is to decrease the yeast by a bit. The breads I've made with smaller amounts of yeast have been much more normal-looking, and I think it may just be a fault with this particular recipe. We'll see.

I'm slowly getting unstressed to the point of being able to write again, and to prove it I accidentally wrote 1400 words worth of Fraser/Diefenbaker gen last night. Not posting it, because a few bits need to be reworked and and the ending is lacking in something I cannot figure out. But it exists, and that is progress!

While I was doing spring cleaning on my hard drive this afternoon, I found these bits of Steve/Tony fic I never did anything with. I think they were supposed to be part of a larger fic set during the current Iron Man storyline, and they obviously had something to do with Tony killing himself, but I really have no idea where I was going with this. So here, have some contextless uber-angst.

Do You Want To Be A Polyester Bride?

On more than one occasion, I've heard Marvel's Civil War described as "That time Steve and Tony had a horrible messy break-up and dragged everyone they knew into it." Honestly, the story just works better - and god knows their horrible OOCness makes more sense - if you read it as a domestic dispute.

Stuff like this? NOT HELPING TO CHANGE MY MIND.

Do I need to mention it would be Steve/Tony?

So I think I mentioned yesterday that I wanted to write a Marvel Adventures AU where the Avengers are the US Olympic Hockey Team? I...possibly have not stopped thinking about that. I even have their positions all worked out!

Steve "Captain America" Rogers - Centre/Team Captain: Steve was the all-American golden boy of the US Olympic team 4 years ago, and all-but-assured a gold medal and a spot on the pro team of his choice...until a suspicious car accident that claimed the life of his young companion and nearly killed him as well. Now Steve's come out of retirement and reclusion to lead the US team again.

Tony "Iron Man" Stark - Right Wing: Tony's an unstoppable force on the ice, always willing to go to the boards and fight for the puck. But off the ice, he's got a lot to hide - like the fact that he's a billionaire with his own multinational corporation...or the fact that he has a heart condition. How long can he keep the truth under wraps?

Peter "Spiderman" Parker - Left Wing:  Unlike Tony's more physical style, Peter's a quick slash-and-dodge guy, known for his ability to find the smallest holes in the opposing team's defense and his love of playing with his opponents, keeping the puck in their end as long as possible. The unofficial team mascot and all-around good guy, and the only one with a girl back home.

Bruce "Hulk" Banner - Defense: Off ice, Bruce is the sweetest, nicest, and possibly shyest guy you'll ever meet. On the ice...Bruce has a bad habit of losing his temper and throwing himself into fights with guys twice his size, something which has gotten him into serious trouble in the past. Will Steve be able to convince him to keep himself in check, or will he get thrown off the ice for good?

Logan "Wolverine" Howlett - Defense: the meanest, nastiest, trash-talking-est player to set foot on the ice, there is nothing Logan won't say or do to the guy in the other colors - and he's almost as bad off the ice, as well. Not known for being much of a team player, but definitely known for being almost impossible to get a puck around and being able to take the hardest hits his opponents can dish out.

Jan "Giant Girl" Van Dyne - Goalie: Not actually that big; in fact, Jan's probably one of the smallest goalies in the league. The nickname comes from the fact that she covers her net so completely she might as well be a giant. The youngest and least experienced player on the US Team, Jan struggles under the stress of training and the pressure of competition, but she always pulls through in the end.

Ororo "Storm" Munroe - Centre: the second-line centre and guaranteed pinch hitter, as well as the most experienced player on the Avengers, Storm's in charge when Steve isn't around, and she's not afraid to let you know it. The unofficial team mother (well, besides Steve) and councilor, she has her hands full with this pack of misfits.

Also featuring Nick Fury as the cantankerous but secretly fond coach and the Red Skull as the captain of the Evil German Team of Evil!

Obviously this takes place in some bizarro alternate universe where the Olympic rules were never changed to allow pro players and the Olympic sports teams are co-ed. But still. I'm still working on the storyline, but it would involve the team having to learn how to be a team on and off the ice, Tony's secret getting exposed, and Steve having to face the Red Skull (who may or may not have been responsible for the accident that ended his career).

*whimpers* God, what the hell is wrong with me?

And For MA This Is Ridiculously Slash-Light

So apparently me being SO NERVOUS about being workshopped means that I can't fall asleep. Who would have guessed. Also roommate has been on the phone for the last hour, which doesn't help. (WTF phone plan does she have? I swear she's on at least 5 hours a day.) But then I thought hey, I just got the first volume of Marvel Adventures: Avengers. Maybe I should do some scans so people can see why they should be reading this. Because OMG SO GOOD. Especially when compared to 616's dead!Steve dead!Jan BND!Peter SHIELD!Osborn suicidal!Tony canon clusterfuck. So. Scans. Have them!

But It Would Be Fuuuuuun

I think I need my head examined. I'm thinking of signing up for the Cap_Ironman Big Bang fest, which has a minimum wordcount requirement of 20,000 words. On the low end of Big Bang fests, but that's a lot for me! Especially when I'm already going to be writing for my English classes.

Why do I think this is a good idea in any way?

If I do do it, I will likely write one of two plots:

a) Tony (probably while trying to do something stupid ala kill his brain with science in the latest Invincible Iron Man), ends up in a post-apocalyptic type alternate universe where he never existed, or never became Iron Man, or died in Afghanistan, and thus no one knows who he is and the world is a scary place. He has to help them fight off the baddies. This would end either with him staying in that world because his sucks too much, or this being some kind of cosmic test that means he gets his Steve back in his world. Or he dies. One of the three.

b) something in the Marvel Adventures universe that is fluffy and cute but plotty, like, I don't know, Steve and Tony have to pretend to be a couple to infiltrate a convention of supervillains and they gradually come to realize their feelings for each other are real, after which they beat up the bad guys and go on a date for hamburgers. This would have no angst, for bringing angst into the MA universe is a hanging offense.

Tell me this is a bad idea!

To The Ends Of The Earth Is A Long Way Away

What the hell? Why am I awake?

I'll tell you why. Because Secret Invasion ended today. And, as expected Tony got fucking whumped to the nth degree - Thor told him he was never talking to him again, the government blamed him for everything bad that's ever happened ever, he got kicked out of being SHIELD Director and replaced by NORM FUCKING OSBORN, his company is pretty much gone...yeah, everyone hates Tony and his life sucks. So someone in the Steve/Tony comm issued a fairy tale comment-drabble challenge, to get some warm fuzzy Tony fic to bolster out spirits.

Apparently my brain sees "write a comment-drabble" and takes it to mean "write 3000+ words of the Steve/Tony version of East of the Sun, West of the Moon. Cause that's what I'm doing right now. Fuuuuuuck.

Here, have a sample.

Once upon a time, there was a young man named Steve. Steve was not wealthy, but he was fair and kind and strong of heart, which matters far more. And because of this, he had devoted his life to fighting the cruel and the wicked, though it was hard, and often terribly lonely. Until the day one of his most terrible enemies finally bested him in battle, leaving him to die where he fell.
