Thank you so much for writing me a story! I'm super easy to please, I promise. Just having heard of/wanting to write one of my fandoms wins you a million points, so I'm sure I'll like whatever you write. All optional details really are optional - if none of my ideas are working for you or you already have a story you are dying to write, I'm sure I'll like that too! But here are some ideas to get you going, anyway. :)

Things I like: slash, femslash, OT3s, gen, complicated, intense, and fucked up relationships (romantic and otherwise), complex, messy, but ultimately loving family relationships, unconventional romance, plotty adventures and casefic, character studies, team-as-family, dub-con, consensual hate-sex, aaaaaall the hurt/comfort. I am always okay with porn, plotty or otherwise.

Things I don't like so much (any prompt-specific exceptions noted below): non-con, extremely graphic violence or gore, character bashing (especially female characters), BDSM, humiliation, non-canonical deaths/deathfic, issue-fic and identity headcanons, a/b/o, modern AUs

More fandom specific thoughts:

1. Murder Most Unladylike Series - Robin Stevens: Hazel Wong, Daisy Wells

I discovered this series this year and immediately fell in love with how completely charming and fun they are, while still managing to cover some pretty serious material, both in terms of the crimes and what we learn about the Deepdean girls and Hazel and Daisy's personal experiences. And for me, the heart of it is totally Daisy and Hazel's friendship - I love what an intense, slightly messed-up person Daisy is, and that we see how rare it is for her to trust someone as much as she does Hazel and how important that friendship is to her, and on Hazel's side, I love that we see her come into her own as a person because of her friendship and experiences with Daisy, and that some of that is being able to stand up for herself and push back when Daisy's running roughshod over her. I'd really like to see something about the two of them together as adults after they are out of school - maybe when the war breaks up they end up getting recruited by Felix for espionage. Or maybe after things have settled down they start a detective agency together, solving all the crimes the police can't figure out. I'd love Daisy/Hazel, but them just being really great friends is awesome too, although I'd prefer no focus on other love interests.

2. Oxenfree (Video Game): Anna Shea, Margaret "Maggie" Adler

Anna and Maggie's story is super fascinating to me - it's so central to what happened to the Sunken and what is happening now to Alex and her friends, but all we see of it is little fragments, and all of them are so, so sad. The Morse code messages especially broke my heart, knowing that while Maggie blamed herself for failing Anna and running away, Anna was still trying to reach out and signing all her codes with "love". I'm really interested in seeing some of time travel shenanigans/fix-it AUs for this one where their attempt to contact the Sunken goes a little bit differently than it did in canon. Maybe instead of Anna getting absorbed, Maggie and Anna get stuck in their own time loop the way Alex did, and have to try to find ways to escape it and fix things? Or maybe Anna still gets trapped, but some of her messages get through, and Maggie starts investigating every way she can think of to send messages back, and try to pull her out again? Feel free to get weird and have fun with the game/time glitch mechanics for this one, for sure! I'd really love Maggie/Anna for this one.

3. In the Forests of Serre - Patricia A. McKillip: Euan Ash, Unciel (Forests of Serre)

This was the very first McKillip book I ever read, years and years ago, and it's still my very favorite - it's such a lovely, elegiac, mystical little fairy tale. And in the middle of all the kings and witches and monsters and people getting thrown out of windows and turning into birds, I love how quiet and domestic Euan and Unciel's scenes at the cottage are. I feel like this is very much a story about healing, and I love that healing for Unciel, who has faced an unspeakable evil, is about puttering in the garden growing things and sitting with the cat and eventually, painfully, finding ways to speak about it. And I will always adore Euan, who has so much wonder and fondess for Unciel (and kind of a crush?) and has these wild, visionary dreams even though he's otherwise the kind of person who puts his boots in the same place every time. I'd love to see something about what they do after the end of the book, now that Unciel's monster has finally been exorcised - do they stay at the cottage, gardening and writing down his stories and teaching Euan how to cook without throwing everything in one pot? Does Unciel go back out into the world to do more wizard things, now with his new assistant/biographer? Does Euan learn more about magic? I'd also really love to see how their relationship changes in the wake of what happened and how they've come to know each other - Unciel/Euan would be totally welcome here!

4. Stellar Firma (Podcast): Trexel Geistman, David 7

I would love to see some Trexel/David 7 that is just as bonkers and ridiculous as the show. Trexel is such a terrible, incompetent, selfish person, but I think in his own completely awful way he does actually really care about David, somehow, and I'd love to see him trying to act on that in the most Trexel way possible - inept, embarrassing courtship rituals, bizarre ideas for a romantic date with someone who has barely ever left his room, completely terrible, damp, weird sex. Meanwhile, David is a person whose human interaction is 90% Trexel and 9% IMOGEN (and 1% Hartro being terrifying), so he's certainly got some weird ideas of how relationships and sex are supposed to work on his end too, along with his own weird kinks and frustrations to work out on Trexel. I'm totally down for Dom!David/sub!Trexel for this one, but mostly just have fun with it.

More fandom specific thoughts:

1. Norma - Bellini/Romani - Norma (Norma), Adalgisa (Norma)

I really love how Norma and Adalgisa's relationship develops in this opera - from Norma's side, she's so sympathetic to Adalgisa's feelings despite her anger, and Adalgisa has such a fantastic loyalty to Norma and an understanding of what a terrible position she's been put in, and they both move really quickly to embracing each other and putting the blame for their tragedy where it really belongs (i.e. that bag of dicks Pollione). In the second act, there's this brief hope spot between the two of them that I find incredibly fascinating:

ADALGISA
I loved him - now I feel
Nothing but friendship.

NORMA
Child - what will you do?

ADALGISA
Return to you what is yours,
Or hide myself, with you, from God and man.

NORMA and ADALGISA
You have won - embrace me.
I have found my friend again.
For the rest of my life
I shall always stay with you.
The earth is big enough
To shelter us both from love.
Together with you, courageously,
We shall fight outrageous Destiny,
As long as in our breasts
Our loving hearts shall beat...

Obviously we quickly move on to the drums of war and things go in a very different direction after that, but I'm really interested in the way this scene dangles the possibility of them leaving the love triangle and the conflict behind and running away together, and makes it sound like something they would both genuinely be happier with. I'd love an alternative-ending AU where instead of all the suicide, they do actually run away together with the children, either to start a new life somewhere else or just to live alone in the woods together far away from everyone else. What kind of life do they make for themselves? How do they deal with what happened, and how does their relationship with each other grow from there? What happens with the Romans? I'd prefer an overall happy ending for this one, as un-operatic as that may be. I'd really love a F/F romance for this, but them finding a deep friendship with each other would also be great!

2. Fancy - Bobbie Gentry (Song) - Mama (Fancy)

The Bobbie Gentry version of this song will always be my favorite - I really love what a bitter, raw edge it has to it, and how clear-eyed Fancy is about what a brutal, desperate choice her mother made for her, and why she had to make it. The flat despair when her mother describes how bad their situation is ("She said, Your Pa's runned off, and I'm real sick/And the baby's gonna starve to death.") never fails to get me in the gut - it's so clear that she's a woman who has made do her whole life with almost nothing, and now that almost nothing's run out, this is the most loving thing she can do to give her daughter a chance, even though it's terrible. I'd love to see something from Mama's POV, either backstory, or leading up to the scene in the song, or just after Fancy leaves, when she knows she isn't ever coming back, that explores her character and her relationship with Fancy and how they got to that moment where she had to make that decision.

3. The Death of the Necromancer - Martha Wells - Sebastion Ronsarde (The Death of the Necromancer - Wells), Cyran Halle (The Death of the Necromancer - Wells)

I love that even though Ronsarde's role in the story is relatively minor, all the details we get about him before he shows up establish that he's the middle of his own completely ridiculous series of crime novels. He's the best investigator in the city! He's in a long-term cat-and-mouse game with Nicolas! He's a master of disguise! The penny sheets breathlessly exclaim his adventures! It's a really fun call-out to classic detective stories, while also making the setting feel more fleshed-out, and like everyone's stories exist outside of the one point of time we see in the book. I'd love to see something set before or after the book's events that focuses on Ronsarde dealing with another magic-related case - maybe with some hijinks and some ridiculous disguises - and Halle getting dragged in as his right-hand man. In the scenes after the prison escape, I really enjoyed how "bickering old married couple" the two of them seemed - I'd love to see something where they are in a long-term relationship and just really married with each other all the time, but I'm also fine with gen.

4. The Book of Mormon - Parker/Stone/Lopez - Kevin Price, Elder "Connor" McKinley

I feel like Kevin ends up in a really interesting, painful place with his faith by the end of the play. So much of his character arc involves deconstructing his Good Mormon Boy facade and figuring out what kind of person he actually is underneath that, ugly parts and all, and while he does sort of find his way back, the crisis of faith he has in the second act feels like something a lot deeper, and I don't really see it being resolved by the end. Meanwhile, for as silly as the show is, McKinley's attempt to continue to try to be a Good Mormon Boy despite being gay really genuinely breaks my heart. I'd love to see something set after the musical, once they have gone home from their mission, where Kevin continues to have a lot of messy, conflicted feelings about his faith and the Church, and McKinley continues to struggle with his faith and his sexuality, and the two of them connect over that and support each other through coming out/leaving the Church. I'd also be happy with Kevin also realizing he has messy feelings for guys in general/McKinley in particular, and that also being another part of his facade to break through - slow-burn Price/McKinley romance definitely welcome here! But either way, I would like them to both somehow end up in a healthier, happier place (outside the Mormon Church).

5. Cut & Run - Madeleine Urban & Abigail Roux - Ty Grady, Zane Garrett

These guys are hands-down one of my all-time favorite M/M romance couples - they are my favorite combination of kind of intensely fucked-up and bad at their feelings but also deeply devoted and somehow in the end actually really good for each other (plus they get whumped to hell and back in canon, which has got to be the fastest way to my heart). I'd love to see some light h/c set during the time they are dating and still in the FBI together - sick, cranky Ty with a cold moping around the FBI office because he can't do everything he wants to (and not-so-subtly angling for more attention from Zane, because he loves it when Zane shows how much he cares with his actions), and Zane wanting to take care of him and not being able to while other people are around. Or either one of them being sick or hurt while they are in the field on a case, and leaning on the other for support/care-taking. For this one, I'd prefer no descriptions of vomiting, but otherwise feel free to make them feverish and miserable in whatever way you'd like.

More fandom specific thoughts:

1. Campaign (Podcast) - Sneak, Tubaik

For minor antagonists who only exist because JPC couldn't stop making ridiculous sounds with his face when they were setting up the BHIKKE plot, I am embarrassingly over-invested in these two jerks. I love how hard Tubaik tries to come across as the suave-and-sophisticated villain type despite the fact that he has the worst lines and zero chill, I love all the quasi-canon history of Sneak in the army, breaking hearts and smuggling contraband, I love their massive, heavily-branded arms and bounty-hunting empire - they're just a lot of fun and silliness in a way that feels so perfectly Campaign, and definitely one of my favorite parts of the BHIKKE arc. I started shipping them pretty hard when Sneak first showed up disguised as a waiter to life-coach Tubaik through his fake-date, and by the time Sneak tried to shoot Vous-Vous just for insulting Tubaik they were pretty much my biggest Campaign OTP - that kind of 'being totally over-invested in each other's happiness but oblivious to the possibility they might both want more' relationship is absolutely my kryptonite. I'd love to see anything about the two of them together, especially if it involves maximum hijinks - more trope-y stuff like the fake-date, awkward sex-pollen incidents, both of them being oblivious while the entire Sneak&Tubaik bounty-hunter crew tries to match-make for them. Something about them trying to get an actual relationship going after the kiss-fall would be pretty awesome, or them running into the Mynock crew again as a couple, or even just general tooling around bounty-hunting. Bonus points for: the Mynock crew being super smug about being the ones to get them together, fun times with weird alien genitals, Sneak's past as a clone-Lothario coming back to make trouble for him

2. Living with Ghosts - Kari Sperring - Gracielis

I love an awful lot of things about this book - the court politics and political maneuvering, the hints of class issues and other tensions we get around the edges of the main plot, the eeriness of the ghosts and the whole magical system, the way so much of the story centers on people's history and mistakes and regrets and failings coming back to haunt them (metaphorically and, uh, literally) and how they try to move past that - but my heart really belongs to Gracielis. He has been broken in such interesting ways, and for so much of the story he is really convinced of the hopelessness of what they're doing and his own worthlessness in trying to stop it - and yet when his back is against the wall at the end he does find it in himself to face Quenfrida, even though he thinks it will be the death of him. I feel like he's in a really interesting place at the end of the book, and I'd love to see something that explores what he does after he leaves the city - how he handles being undarios now, changing careers, leaving the kind of life he had as a courtesan in the city, rebuilding his sense of himself after so many years of being under Quenfrida's thumb. I have no strong ship preferences - I'm happy with Gracielis/Thiercelin if you're interested in them having another go at it once they've got some distance from what happened, or Gracielis/OMC if you'd like to give him a nice boyfriend without so much baggage, or just Gracielis finding himself after so long of belonging to other people.

3. Administration - Val Toreth, Keir Warrick

I really love all the dystopian world-building that Francis does for this series, but my biggest draw is definitely Warrick and Toreth's relationship. I love that we get to see how it develops over such a long time into something really serious, and how that changes both of them, both in terms of how they are with each other - the sacrifices Warrick decides he's willing to make to keep Toreth in his life on Toreth's terms, the ways that Toreth does try to be someone Warrick needs even though emotionally he's really really bad at it - and just how they are as people - the choices Toreth makes in First Against The Wall are not, I think, the choices he would have made before they met, and neither are the choices Warrick makes in Family Values. I'd be really interested in something that looks at their relationship from an outsider POV - not someone who's been in on the whole thing, like Sara or Cele, but something like the other I&I investigators, once Toreth being in a long-term thing starts making the gossip pool, or what Warrick's business partners make of Toreth's dramatics. Or a hurt/comfort scenario with Toreth being the hurt one (I'd prefer a temporary illness/injury for this one) - how they deal (or don't deal) with Toreth being in a temporarily more vulnerable position and having to put up with being taken care of. Or casefic is always good as well! Since the BDSM element is so central to their relationship, I'm fine with it being included in any sex scenes - however, I find the psychological control games that Toreth plays with him more interesting than the straight physical kinks, so I'd prefer more of the focus to be on that, and I'd rather no scenes with the suspension cabinet.

4. Dream Daddy - Dadsona, Ernest

I was not expecting Ernest to my favorite of the kids (excepting Amanda, of course!), but oh man, he really, really is. He's such a terrible little shit, but I love the little hints we get of his squishier side - his love of terrible movie romances, how cute he is with Duchess Cordelia - it really makes him feel realistically like he's not a bad kid, just struggling a lot with his authority issues and his dads' divorce and acting out. I'd be really happy with something about Dadsona awkwardly trying to feel out his place in their family without stepping on any toes, once he and Hugo have started getting serious/long-term, and trying to figure out how to win Ernest over/co-parent reasonably with Hugo and his ex. Dadsona+Ernest bonding would be pretty great (maybe he secretly loves terrible romances too and they become movie buddies?), or them having an uneasy, we're-not-hostile-but-we're-not-friends truce that gets shaken up by a minor crisis when Hugo and his ex are unavailable (maybe Ernest crashes his skateboard and Dadsona is the one who stays at the ER with him all night?) and leads to bonding. If it leads to Ernest easing up on the being-a-little-shit thing a bit and building a better relationship with his dad that would also be great. I'm not interested in any Ernest ships but if you'd like to give him an embarrassingly obvious one-sided crush on, like, Pablo, I wouldn't say no. Bonus points for them still getting a dog, Amanda being Cool Big Step-Sister-y.

Campaign (Podcast) - Trystan "Tryst" Valentine, Bacta

Campaign was the first roleplaying podcast I got into, and I think it may have set my bar ludicrously high for the genre. I adore the cast chemistry and the way they play off each other for ever-increasingly heights of silliness and terrible/amazing running jokes, the amount of fun they have with the world-building and tropes of the Star Wars universe, and their willingness to completely derail the plot for episodes worth of in-character nonsense and team meetings, and I also really appreciate that despite all that, they still keep the plot moving forward and give us genuine stakes and a lot of serious character work. I love all the character relationships/interactions and how unique and organic they feel, but I'm especially interested in Tryst and Bacta. I am really, deeply fond of both of them on their own - I love Tryst's breezy dedication to being a garbage person and the way he uses that persona to obscure the times when he actually takes things seriously, and Bacta's trying so hard to be a responsible adult type person on a crew of people who have never learned the meaning of the word - and I love the way they push against each other in their different personalities/styles/plans and the moments they have when they are able to acknowledge each other in a more serious way. Bacta/Tryst is kind of my OTP for the series, and I'd really like something that focuses on their relationship, but I'm happy with gen/friendship fic in that direction as well. I feel like this show is so ridiculously trope-y and over-the-top already, it lends itself really well to the silliest of fanfic tropes - I'd love to see something that goes full-out trope-fic, like body-swapping, undercover-as-lovers, accidentally married, sex pollen, that kind of thing. Or slice-of-life on the Mynock, with all the attendant nonsense that goes on there. Or something about their respective, very weird childhoods, with Tryst's experiences with slavery and his sisters and Bacta's experiences with training and his clone brothers. Bonus points for tattoo kink, Mynock rules/rituals/boards, and adorable (but still fail-y) co-parenting for Tamlin.

Sheath and Knife - Sister, Brother

There are a few different versions and quite a few covers of this ballad: the version I first heard and the one I had in mind for this request is this one by Ellie Bryan, an adaptation of the first version here. This song has easily become one of my all-time favorite murder ballads, and I'm fascinated by how different it is from most of the other entries in the (comparatively small) category of incest ballads. There's no rape or incest-reveal like in The King's Dochter Lady Jean or the Bonny Hind, and no impulsive murder like in Lucy Wan - both the incest and the sister's death appear to be consensual, and it gives the whole thing this sort of quiet, tragic, inevitable feeling. I'd be really interested in something set in the build-up to the song's events, about how this relationship happened and got to the point that it did, especially something that plays up the dark secrets, whispered gossip, claustrophobic feeling of them trying to hide this intense illicit relationship under the scrutiny of court. Alternatively, I really love the transition to the hall at the end of the song - something about the way he's sitting there in horrified shock at what he just did while the music and dancing continues on around him really catches me, it makes him seem so young and broken. I'd love to see something with the fall-out from that scene, as either the sister's death is discovered or he starts to break down - even something like a haunting - that plays up the contrast between what's happening inside his head and what everyone else knows.

City of Bones - Martha Wells - Khat, Sagai, Miram

The worst thing about this book is that it's a standalone, because it totally kills me that Wells didn't write anything else in this setting or with these characters. I really like the world-building here, and especially how much it gets centered on the politics and treacheries and biases of Charisat. And of course, I love all the characters - but especially Khat. I think his perspective as an outsider in a city that is hostile if not outright fatal to outsiders in general and krismen in particular brings so much to the story, and he has such a great, cynical narrative voice. I love his prickliness and his defensiveness and his unwillingness to open up or tell people things, and I love that the story lets us see how much of that comes from the dire circumstances he left the enclave and what his experience has been like in Charisat as a second-class non-citizen. And I also love that we get to see how he has let Sagai and Miram in (even as he tries to keep them at a wary distance), in a way he does with very few people, and how that was obviously the result of a lot of effort on their part to earn his trust and make him part of their family. I'd be really happy to see something set right after Sagai and Khat first meet, when Khat is recovering and Sagai and Miram are still trying to get him to even admit he speaks their language, or something about how they made that transition, after a year in the city, from being acquaintances to being relic hunting partners to sharing living space. Or something set after the end of the book, about what they end up doing once they all make it to Kenniliar. Or casefic about one of their adventures hunting relics. For this one, I'd be happy with either Miram/Sagai/Khat OT3 or Miram/Sagai+Khat as their friend who is basically family and needs someone to look after him. Bonus points for weird kris biology and Sagai and Khat relic hunting nerdery.

More fandom specific thoughts:

The Grass King's Concubine - Kari Sperring - any character

I read this book as part of the FFA book club, and instantly fell in love with both worlds - the unsettling weirdness of the WorldBelow, the intricate court politics mixed up with messy personal politics, the budding industrial and social revolution in Aude and Jehan's city - and more or less all the characters. I'd love something about any of the nominated characters, by themselves or in any combination. Something about Sujien and/or Liyan set in the court before it fell apart would be great - I found myself really wanted to see more of the Cadre's dynamic, how they interacted and bounced off each other, and something that got more into Sujien's (kind of messed up) headspace would be great. Or something after the book about Liyan, getting into trouble and causing explosions and exploring all of the exciting innovations that the new world has for him. Or Aude and Jehan going back to the city and being rabble-rousers with the labor movement. Or world-building fic about the court and how it worked/works would be great too. I'm not overly invested in any ships for this book, but I would not say no to Aude/Jehan/Liyan, or to Sujien/someone unrequited and ill-considered. Bonus points for ferrets.

Bedlam's Bard - Mercedes Lackey - Eric Banyon, Beth Kentraine, Korendil

Eric, Beth, and Kory were my OT3 before I even understood what that meant, and I think they will always be the OT3 of my heart, as silly and trope-y and oh-so-90s as these books are. I love everything about their relationship, how cute and affectionate they are in San Francisco, how Eric and Kory are there for Beth when her fearlessness fails her, how Beth and Eric help Kory find more of a purpose, how Eric finally has people who love him but also make him grow the fuck up. I'd love something set right after book one and the bus station, when they've just gotten their feelings out in the open and are still trying to figure out what that means and how they fit together as a three-way relationship, especially if it involves Eric being insecure/unsure of his place, or struggling to deal with wanting Kory. Or domestic-y OT3 shenanigans in San Francisco would be pretty great too. Or just threesome porn, that is also fine. I found the no-homo retcon of their relationship in the later books very frustrating, so I'd prefer fic that takes place before those (although an AU where they don't break up and Beth and Kory go to New York with Eric would be pretty fun. So if you want to try that, have at it!). Bonus points for hot-tubbing and Eric and Beth playing with Kory's ears.

Doctrine of Labyrinths - Sarah Monette - Felix Harrowgate, Malkar Gennadion

So, these books are basically the pure distillation of my id, and Felix and Malkar's relationship is kind of the pinnacle of that. I hesitate to say that I ship it, as such (okay, no, I totally do, sorry), but I do find it absolutely fascinating - completely and utterly toxic and abusive, but fascinating - how much of an influence Malkar has on Felix, the way he acts and thinks about magic and other people and himself, the ugliest parts of his personality he can't stop himself from showing, even down to little gestures and ways of speaking he copied from him. I'd really love any fic that explores more of their relationship. I'm going cheat and link to the conversation that I had right after I read Melusine: this is something I would love to see - more of the little cult of personality Felix built around himself at the court, and how Malkar disrupts that, tormenting him in innocuous, horrible ways that Felix can't explain to anyone else. Or something set further in the backstory - more of Felix's daily life with Malkar in Arabel and how he trained him and broke him, or about how Felix decided/managed to (somewhat) break the Oblige d'Sange, or Felix's introduction to the Mirador under Malkar's patronage. Given that their relationship involves canonical child sexual abuse and rape, I'm fine with non-con for this canon, but I'm more interested in the psychological abuse than very graphic physical abuse. However, bonus points for creepy non-con touching, especially face-touching.

Escort Mission - Cracked.com - L33t (Escort Mission), N00b (Escort Mission)

I really was not expecting to fall for this series as hard as I did - I'm not more than a casual gamer - but the slightly-antagonist-friends dynamic between Leet and Noob kind of hooked me, Michael Swaim is somehow always funny even when he shouldn't be, and then they started getting all slashy and cuddling and yeah, now I ship it. I'd love get-together fic for the two of them - something where they've mostly accidentally ended up basically dating without realizing it, or courtship via video games, or courtship via video game tactics which goes somehow horribly, horribly wrong (but then right). Gen is also fine with me, as long as they are still roommates/friends - anything in the tone of the series would be great. Or throw them in the middle of a zombie outbreak! I'm not familiar with a ton of video games, but I still like reading about games I don't know, so feel free to throw in some video game commentary/jokes if you'd like. The weirder the better - visual novels, dating sims, obscure indie games, whatever you like/seems likely to be funniest in context. Bonus points for couch-cuddling.

Swordspoint Series - Ellen Kushner - Katherine Talbert

I just - KATHERINE IS GREAT I LOVE HER. I was prepared not to love her - I read The Fall of the Kings before I read this, and she is not the nicest person in that book. And then I got to this one and, she's still a Tremontaine through and through, so difficult, and a bit of a terrible person. But she's so dashing and romantic and loyal to her friends and unwilling to put up with fuckery, I really do love her a lot. I found the ending to the book a little frustrating, since between the ending and the epilogue it skips over all the most interesting stuff I wanted to see. I'd love a fic set right after Alec and Richard left about her taking over the duchy, building up her powerbase in the city, winning over the loyalty of Alec's staff, swordfighting sexist jerks, etc. And making out with girls, that would also be good. Or a story where she and the actress playing the swordsman in the play have sex while roleplaying as boys? More about the duality of her identity as a swordfighter in general would be pretty interesting. Bonus points for ridiculous romantic literature.

Things I like: slash, femslash, OT3s, gen, complicated, intense, and fucked up relationships (romantic and otherwise), non-conventional romance, plotty adventures and casefic, character studies, team-as-family, dub-con, consensual hate-sex, aaaaaall the hurt/comfort. I am always okay with porn, plotty or otherwise.

Things I don't like so much: non-con, extremely graphic violence or gore, character bashing (especially female characters), BDSM, humiliation, non-canonical deaths/deathfic

More fandom-specific thoughts:

Vi är bäst! | We Are the Best!

Okay, I'm inclined to have an emotional soft spot for this movie, since it was one of the very first dates I went on with my girlfriend. But I really do think it's one of the better teenager movies I've ever seen - even when the girls are being really silly, because 13, the movie always takes them 100% seriously, and the result is just really unironically earnest and sweet. I love how much focus is given to their messy emotions and the evolution of their relationships with each other. Something from Hedvig's POV would be really interesting for me - so much of the movie is her getting quietly dragged along and not really asserting herself, but she has a lot of covert development as a person through their friendship, and I'd like to see more of what's going on in her head. I'd also be pretty happy with femslash - one of the three coming out, or realizing she has feelings for one of the others, or dating one of the others and how that affects the group dynamic. No preference to pairing, and if you would like to throw them together into a giggly OT3 I would certainly not complain. I would prefer that you not permanently break up the group or have them fight too seriously, and feel free to age them up/set things post-canon for romance purposes. Bonus points for punk rock references, weird fashion, and Hedvig's mom.

Guilded Age

There aren't too many characters in Guilded Age I don't like an awful lot, but Frigg is absolutely, hands-down, 100% my favorite. I love how brave she is, how tough she is, how much she swears, how few fucks she gives for what other people think/do, and how she is kind of a terrible person - but also, when it comes down to it, how she clearly cares about her friends and wants to fight for/with them, even if she would rather pull her own arm off than admit it. So anything Frigg-centric would make me super happy, whether it's adventure-fic with her hitting all the things with her magic hammer, sexytimes fic where she gets to clear the dust out (any pairing is great, although I'd prefer not breaking up Syr'Nj/Byron), backstory about her time pre-comics with the Sisterhood, or backstory about her character outside the game/in the tube, because she sounded really interesting IRL too. I'm also really interested in her relationship with Gravedust - both on what she gets out of having an older mentor kind of figure, and what he sees in her, and how that reflects on both of their real-life counterparts. Something where Gravedust shows he cares about her and Frigg grudgingly accepts/reciprocates would make me pretty happy.

Cat-Eye Willie Claims His Lover

Every time I listen to this song, I am torn between being impressed at how much creepiness and supernatural world-building Dave Carter managed to imply in a 3-minute song, and frustrated because we only got half the story. Bonnie is a fascinating character to me - she's stuck in a terrible situation (which, arguably she got herself into, with the betting herself in poker and making fun of Willie, but it's still terrible and undeserved), but she has the forethought to bring a silver dagger to the bedroom and murder the fuck out of Willie. I desperately want to know what exactly she was doing for those twenty years afterwards, because I can't believe she wasn't making some kind of plan to deal with Willie's curse. I also really want to know what she means by the line at the end "for i have served one master, true and only" - I feel like there are a lot of really interesting possibilities for that, depending on who you read her as talking about, and what that would mean for her. Alternatively, I'd be pretty happy with something about her and Willie's son, growing up with the knowledge of all this back-story, and what he rides off at the end of the song to do.

Scayered Straights (Cracked.com Quentin Tarantino Parody)

I wish I had enough money to throw into Quentin Tarantino's face to make this movie actually exist, I really, really do. Luckily, I have fanfiction - so I'd really like something as over-the-top, ridiculous, and violent as the movie would be. Given the nature of the trailer, I'm fine with including homophobic slurs, although if you aren't comfortable with including them that is totally okay too. I'd love to see the pre-canon story of the Protagonist and his Husband and their adventures as world-traveling assassins falling in love while fighting off their enemies together (or the weirdest meet-cute over a dead body ever. Or their star-crossed romance on opposite sides of a crime war. Or whatever headcanon you have for them!). Or more context for that scene in the limo with the senator and the gay marriage law. Or that time the Protagonist and Soren Bowie's character totally had hate sex. Or gay adventure fic after the end of the "movie". Pretty much anything, really.

Valor Series - Tanya Huff

I tried to narrow myself down to specific characters this year, but it's hard - there's just so much interesting stuff going on in this universe for me to pick. But I wouldn't say no to: slice of life from Torrin's marriage (or snarky romance, or Torrin having adventures), The Romantic Gunslinging Adventures of Binti Mashona, Lady-Kissing Sniper, or Sh'Quo Company gen missionfic, prank wars, shore-leave hijinks, etc. If you'd like to do more with the Everyone is Bi theme in the books - Torrin's ex-girlfriends? Gender-neutral drunken spin-the-bottle on station down-time? All the gay makeouts? - that would be awesome. I know these books have a high bodycount, but I'd prefer if you kept the character death to a minimum - and if you'd like to pretend that any canonically dead characters (*cough*Haysole*cough*) made it out alive I won't tell on you. Pretty much any pairing is acceptable, canon or not, especially if it is ridiculous/brain-breaking. Bonus points for Torrin kicking all the ass, wild rumors about what Sh'Quo company does to the enemy/to new recruits/on leave, and sex pollen.

Psmith - Wodehouse

If you are inclined to write some Psmith/Mike, I would love to see how Psmith goes about trying to court Mike - from what we've seen in the books, I suspect it would involve lavish gifts and getting them both into all sorts of hijinks and trouble, and completely obliviousness on Mike's part that he is being courted in the first place - in other words, grand farce, ending in make-outs. If you are not inclined to slash, I will happily settle for just the dramatic hijinks, though. I'd prefer something set during their boarding school years, or when they are both at university together, rather than during the later books - I am pretty sure that Psmith is responsible for kicking off my deep, deep love of vaguely homoerotic boys' boarding school series, and it still holds a dear place in my heart for that. Bonus points for socialism references, cricket, and Psmith judging other people's clothes.

Bonus points for Frigg+Syr'Nj awkward friendship, creative swearing, and for things being Complicated with Rachel.

Lakeside View Apartment Suites - any

Like I said in my sign-up, I really just want more of the people and the life that we see in this song - there's so much suggested but not answered of who these guys are, how they ended up as drug dealers, how they met each other, how they are going to try to keep going or get out or fail miserably. Anything that expands on the glimpses of the characters we get and their relationships would be great too. If you'd like to give me a happy ending where they all turn their lives around and become teachers and play basketball with at-risk kids I will not complain at all! But if you'd like to keep with the melancholy tone of the song and give them a long slow bad ending that is totally great too. Bonus points for setting it in interesting/unusual cities and mutually drugged-up sex.

The Bill - Craig Gilmore, Gina Gold

Not gonna lie, I started watching The Bill because I heard through the grapevine it was a cop show with a gay storyline, and then I fell head-over-heels for Craig 50 episodes before Luke even showed up. I'm really fascinated with how much he feels like he has prove himself constantly, how outspoken and confrontational he is when people try to hassle him or other gay characters, and how under the pushiness that's forced on him he really is just kind of a sweet awkward dork. So anything that looks at how Craig deals (or, uh doesn't) with other people, and with homophobia in the police force, would be pretty great. I'd also like to see more of him and Gina as friends - I love the way she sort of ends up as the person he can trust talking about his relationships to, even though they don't have that much in common on the surface. Or Gina-POV/Gina-centric fic, instead! Because competent older women who don't put up with any bullshit because they have a fucking job to be doing, thanks are kind of my catnip, and she is such a beautifully hard-ass unrepentant bitch I can't help but adore her. If you'd like to do casefic, or just canon-esque day-in-the-station-house fic, that would be super. Bonus points for Craig/Luke, and Reg Hollis being all Reg Hollis-y, because *heart*.

Cyteen - Justin, Grant, Ari II

So, I may be just a little over-invested in Grant/Justin. There's just so much there - Justin's massive trauma, Grant being an azi, Ari II's existence, the incredibly repressive atmosphere at Reseune - putting tremendous pressure on them, and they still manage to work out the healthiest unhealthy relationship they can manage with each other. My mental image of the two of them is just sitting in their apartment, clinging to each other like drowning victims in a storm. So something that explored the dynamic between them more than we see in canon would be great. Or something from an outsider POV. Or throw another source of pressure at them and see how they deal with it. Or just show one of those quiet moments of domesticity and emotional support between them. Bonus points for Justin being the one who is there emotionally for Grant. I'd also be interested in something plotty with Ari II that deals with the tension between their relationship with each other and their relationship with her (and Ari, as we all know very well, is not above manipulating that for herself). Or any of the above from Ari's POV, because the way she reads Justin and Grant (with what she knows about Ari I) is pretty fascinating to me as well. Or just something about Ari being Ari (scary-smart, dangerous, manipulative, but still trying to do more or less the right thing).

The Picture of Dorian Gray - any

So, I may have become slightly obsessed after seeing Oscar Wilde: The Opera, and reread both versions of the novel and watched every single (semi-decent) adaptation in existence and given myself a lot of feelings. But I'd really love something that looks at Dorian's character - for as much as he tries to play himself as the corrupted innocent, even in his first scenes there's still an edge of cruelty to him, of holding his feelings above everyone else's, and something that looked at what was in him that was so susceptible to Harry's influence would be really interesting. I'd also be pretty happy with any combination of Dorian/Basil, Harry, or Alan, under any circumstances - one of Basil's painting sessions, or more of how he deals with his tortured crush on Dorian, Harry's designs on Dorian's rather precarious virtue, or especially something about just what, exactly, Dorian was using to blackmail Alan with. Or, you know, just straight up porn. Bonus points for literary allusions, loss of virginity, and Victorian sexuality - whether it's 'let's all repress our boarding school homosexual experiences,' or in the school of Sins of the Cities of the Plains and Romance of Lust.

Valor Series - any

I tried really hard to narrow myself down to specific characters, but it too hard - there's just too much interesting stuff going on in this universe for me to pick. So if you have a personal favorite character, or you'd like to make up some OCs and run with the world-building, have at it! But I wouldn't say no to: slice of life from Torrin and Craig's marriage (or snarky romance with Torrin and Craig, or Torrin and Craig having adventures), The Romantic Gunslinging Adventures of Binti Mashona, Lady-Kissing Sniper, Haysole/Hollice romance fic or one-night stand fic or friendship fic, some of Haysole's choicer pranks in the station, Ressk and Werst overcoming their differences to fuck with everyone or just take over the world, and gen missionfic with Sh'Quo Company, set before Valor's Choice or any point in the novels. If you'd like to do more with the Everyone is Bi theme in the books - Torrin's ex-girlfriends? Craig's ex-boyfriends? Gender-neutral drunken spin-the-bottle on station down-time? All the gay makeouts? - that would be awesome. I know these books have a high bodycount, but I'd prefer if you kept the character death to a minimum - and if you'd like to pretend that any canonically dead characters (*cough*Haysole*cough*) made it out alive I won't tell on you. What with work and life and being in a lot of fandoms with either an overly strong narrative voice or an intimidating amount of back-canon to worry about, it's been about six months since I've written anything. Two years since I've written fic that wasn't for Yuletide.

This week I got over 1000 words down, and I've got the next scene planned.

What did it take to get me back into writing, after all this time?

Fucked-up manipulative dub-con gaslighting porn where Hannibal fucks a drugged up, half-delusional Will and then convinces him the sex never happened. That is what I am writing now.

I am so totally going to hell for this.

This is Cosette! So named because she's rather timid and shy, but I think once she gets used to me she's be quite sweet. And because she was abandoned (and almost eaten!), but now she's been (hopefully) happily adopted.

Right now I'm lying on the floor watching her explore the living room.

Sometimes, in the course of doing research for a story, I read every major piece of Arthurian canon from 1100-1350. And sometimes I learn about roofing practices in pre-industrial England, or the comparative practices of human sacrifice in Iron Age Northern Europe and Pre-Columbian Central America, or marriage structures in Heian Era Japan, or the geographic layout of Chicago, or agriculture in Tibet.

And sometimes I spend my entire lunch break making a chart to try to figure out the comparative odds of having to fuck your sibling to conceive a child if you are both in opposite-sex relationships, vs one being in a same-sex relationship.

Conclusion: if both siblings are married to the opposite sex, then every combination of genders/older sibling&spouse fertility can produce a child, but there are several combinations where the only option is either incest, or a child who isn't genetically related to the family. If the younger sibling is married to the same sex, there are a few combinations that can't produce a child, because there is only one male/female in the group, but every combination that can make a baby can make it without incest, and it will genetically related. So if you want to minimize the sibling-fucking while still keeping baby-making options open, gay marriage isn't a bad idea!

(just because this story - I've been calling it Obligate Gay Marriage 'Verse - is totally id-y wish fulfillment doesn't mean I can't try to come up with retroactive ways to make the world-building plausible! And no, incest-avoidance is not the only reason this world has gay marriage, I swear.)

I am in Seattle! Weather is much better than I have been led to believe is possible (and for two days in a row we've been able to see Mt. Rainier, even the natives seem a bit shocked by that). Have looked at rather a lot of art, with a considerable amount of art looming in the future. (Dale Chihuly, still pretty awesome. My phone is full of pictures of glass flowers and Cthulhus. Sunday there will be Rembrandt.) Everywhere I turn there are hipsters on bicycles. Or businessmen on bicycles. Just, bicycles, everywhere (which in and of itself makes me wish I lived here).

I have spent a frankly embarrassing amount of money (by which I mean, any money, at all) on cheese to bring home with me.
masterofmidgets: (gotta be kidding me)
I have work dreams on a fairly regular, if infrequent, basis - mostly when things are especially stressful, or when I'm learning something new that I'm afraid of doing wrong. All of a very similar type, where I am setting up an order that gets massively complicated and messy, or where I need to do important follow-up that I can't get done, or I am editing something that goes horribly wrong (one particularly memorable one, I got all the way to the end of something, sent it out, thought it was fine, and then [personal profile] colourofsaying saw it on the internet and texted me frantically to let me know it was about child molesting). I keep waking up and falling back into it, convinced that if I don't finish it I will be in horrible trouble, and eventually have to talk myself down and convince myself that I cannot affect our workflow with my brain.

Last night I watched Hannibal (which is awesome and I love it and it gives me lots of feelings, the most predominant of which is eeeeeeew) just before I went to bed.

These two things are related. In that I had a work dream/nightmare in which I was setting up an order for an urgent police bulletin about someone eating people.

...I don't think I like that kind of mental crossover.

*waves*

Still alive. Just...work. SO MUCH WORK. I've been working so much overtime that I've developed an eye twitch, which used to only happen during finals week when I hadn't slept for four days straight. My boss has been giving me that "you do know you are allowed to use your vacation days" look again, too, since I haven't had any time off yet this year (soon to be rectified, thank every single god collectively and by name). We are in the difficult position of being both massively busy and massively short-handed (10 open positions in an office of 50 people is TEN TOO MANY), and since I can do more now I feel obligated to step up and do it. For two hours after I'm supposed to be home. Which doesn't leave me a lot of time or energy for much besides collapsing into a sad pathetic heap and watching Supernatural.

But this too shall pass. I got my promotion, I'm getting more money now, and this weekend my mom came over and helped me move all my furniture because sometime in the near future I am getting a rabbit. Also I discovered that Sue Perkins has a new sitcom where she's a dorky lesbian veterinarian, so that's pretty much amazing.

Arsenal, boys, you're breaking my heart. And making Jack Wilshere make the sad puppy face. That is not acceptable!

I don't know, it just hurts to know that they are capable of so much better than this, and then to have to watch them get shot down over and over again. Fucking football, I can't even.
masterofmidgets: (ask me later)
Bad: Working 2+ hours of overtime doing awful, awful financial tables.

Worse: Doing it twice in one week, because we are short-handed (especially on people senior enough to do tables), and I am a sucker.

Better: It's paid overtime? If I survive this month, my bank balance will appreciate me.

Best: I've got a review and editorial exam next week, and if I pass (which is hopefully likely), I'll be receiving a promotion, with attendant raise. Fingers crossed!

Look, I'm just saying, that there does not exist somewhere on the internet a Horatio Hornblower vid to "Backside Rules The Navy" is clearly a travesty of the highest order. Fandom, I am judging you forever. And so is every midshipman who has ever ogled Horatio when he takes his shirt off.

Happy New Year, all! Time for Yuletide reveals!

This year I wrote:

Title: The Knight Who Trespasses
Fandom: Arthurian Mythology
Rating: M
Pairings: Guinevere/Arthur Pendragon, Lancelot du Lac/Arthur Pendragon, Guinevere/Lancelot du Lac, Guinevere/Lancelot du Lac/Arthur Pendragon
Wordcount: 3614
Summary: “They made me see that the world was beautiful if you were beautiful, and that you couldn't get unless you gave. And you had to give without wanting to get.” T.H. White - The Once and Future King. In which Lancelot wears a token, wins a tournament, and receives a prize.

I can't remember the last time I did this much research for a fic, but it was so much fun. I mean, it helps that I am a huge Arthurian romance and general medieval lit nerd, and that I had my own copy of Malory and Gawain and the Green Knight already sitting out on my bookcase, but, yeah. Research.

This is one fic where I was almost tempted to make footnotes, just to keep track of where everything was coming from. The basic characterization/background/timeline is from Malory's Morte D'Arthur (since that's the most exhaustive, and also since I couldn't find a copy of the Vulgate/Post-Vulgate Cycles anywhere online, woe). In my head, this takes place somewhere in the early part of Book V - Mordred has been born but isn't at the court, Galahad is a baby (and Lancelot doesn't know about him), and the conflict between Tristan and Mark over Iseult is in the early stages. I also played around with some other sources as well - most of the non-Malory bits, as well as the verses at the beginning, are from the Stanzaic Mort D'Arthure (which is similar enough that you can see where Malory lifted it for source-text), but there are also a few bits of scene-setting from the very much different Alliterative Mort D'Arthur (where Lancelot is a useless dork and everything is all the time swords). Gawain and the Green Knight has definitely happened in this story, but Gawain and Dame Ragnell not so much. And some half-remembered Marie de France and a very little bit of Once and Future King may have snuck in unawares (but not that bit in Lanval where Guinevere calls a knight a fag because he doesn't want to sleep with her. Because that was silly.) No Tennyson, though, and absolutely no Mists of Avalon.

Mostly I just really, really enjoyed a chance to write Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot, which is one of those pairings that is just baseline to reading the canon to me - I cannot make sense of their story except as three people who are all knotted up in love and duty and obligation, with too many feelings to disentangle themselves and no way out that they can see. The tragedy wouldn't be half so wrenching if Lancelot hadn't been so devoted to his king, if Guinevere's choice hadn't been so impossible, and if Arthur hadn't trusted them both with everything in him. (and this isn't just the fangirl in me - there are a few places in Malory where Arthur's reactions are...odd, and very hard to reconcile with him not already knowing what Guinevere and Lancelot were getting up to. Not at all convinced there weren't a few medieval shippers on board there.) Trying to make a story about the relationship between the three of them, and the delicate balance of rumor and public perception around them, was pretty interesting. Hopefully I didn't bore everyone around me by blathering about this constantly all month.
masterofmidgets: (lazy sunday)
It's not so much that I ship Javert/Valjean as a thing that is there in the text, or even in the subtext (unlike Enjolras/Grantaire, which is clearly canon). It's that I want to rewrite the whole universe around Javert to give him the better life and the epic, antagonistic, loving friendship/romance with Valjean that could have been. Because he's had such a cold, empty, unforgiving life - deservedly, perhaps, and through choices entirely his own, but he's so unhappy in himself, and I love him so much, and I want to fix it.

Non-Javert thoughts on Les Mis: Marius was delightfully drippy until Empty Chairs broke my heart into tiny little pieces, but there is still nothing you can do to make me care about Ingenue Soprano/Naive Lovestruck Pretty-Boy in a musical where they are surrounded by more interesting goings-on. Needed more Eponine, and in fact I would be quite happy with Javert and Eponine Go Off To have Adventures: The Musical. I sobbed uncontrollably basically every time Gavroche was on screen, but especially That Scene. There are a few lines I am sad that they cut (especially Grantaire's bit in Drink With Me, which I would have much preferred to Bring Him Home going on soooo long), but Do You Hear The People Sing was basically flawless perfection.

I am really feeling the need to read the book now. And maybe listen to the 25th Anniversary recording 5 or 10 times over. Just to get a grasp on all these emotions I'm having now.
masterofmidgets: (gotta be kidding me)
Today I walked six miles through Downtown trying to find a place that in retrospect (i.e. after we gave up and went home and consulted google maps) was half a block from the pub where we started. Just, in the other direction.

Moral of the story: I am never letting [livejournal.com profile] hanjuuluver give directions again.
