masterofmidgets: (fight song)
When I went to check my mail today, there was a letter from my aunt with twenty dollars in it. The letter said to take a night off and go to the movies, but the only movie I want to see right now is New Moon, and I already promised Hanjuuluver we could go when I get home next month so we can mock it together. So now I have twenty dollars that I am not allowed to spend responsibly, and I cannot make up my mind what to spend it on:
  • One of these hair slides - pretty and interesting looking, and also pretty! And I've wanted to try out hair slides for awhile, and see if I can get the hang of them, because they are really neat. Not entirely sure these would be the right size for my hair, but they sound big enough.
  • Sims 2 Seasons - Max didn't have the RAM or the graphics to support any of the newer expansion packs, but I think Spock does (judging by how smoothly the game runs now), and it would be nice to have the extra functions and shiny. On the other hand, I've had a lot less time for simming this term, and I don't think that's going to change.
  • A Seanan MchGuire CD - either Stars Fall Home or Red Roses and Dead Things. Stars Fall Home has more songs that I know I will adore (River Lies, Paper Moon, Still Catch the Tide), but Red Roses has a Supernatural song (Darkness Falls) that I am dying to get my hands on. Neither album is available in mp3 format, or readily found in less expensive, less legal venues (which I guess is the curse of liking such an obscure genre).
Bah. I am such rubbish at making my mind when no option readily stands out. This is one of the reasons I didn't declare my major until the last possible moment.

Problem: Ever since the last round of bleaching/dyeing, my hair's been...weird. The non-bleached parts are fine of course, and still loving my shampoo bars, but the purple bits really don't. When I wash my hair, those bits dry feeling stiff and kind of greasy, like I haven't rinsed my conditioner out all the way. However, they do really like CO-washing - the last couple of times I CO-washed instead of sampoo bars they felt fine after they dried. But I don't want to do CO exclusively, since it makes my hair smell a little funny and I get build-up.

Conjecture: Since the front part of my hair is damaged from the bleach, it needs the extra moisture of CO-washing, and can't handle the bars, which have a reputation of working less well on damaged hair. But the rest of my hair, which is virgin, doesn't need the heavy-duty treatment and likes the bars fine. Solution? CO-wash the purple bits only, and shampoo the rest.

Methodology: When I went to take a shower this morning, I combed out the front part of my hair, and pulled the rest back into a ponytail. In the shower I wet all my hair down, and poured conditioner just onto the loose part. Then lots and lots of scrubbing and scalp massaging and general tediousness. Once I had a decent lather, I undid the ponytail and shampooed the rest of my hair like normal, did a vinegar rinse and conditioner, and rinsed everything out.

Results: all my hair is happy yay! I may have to stick with this, even if it is stupidly time-consuming. But hey, it's only a couple times a week, I think I'll live. Also, this will probably make my color last longer, since it's the surfectants in the shampoo that lift it out so fast. So double yay for that.

I did my first French braid! \o/

I've been trying to teach myself how to French braid for a few months now with very little progress, but I was bored tonight watching NCIS and needed something to do with my hands, so I thought I'd give it another shot. And I have met with great success!

...well, great is probably an overstatement. Moderate success. Success in some small measure. Evidence of potential success lying ahead. But while it may be messy and uneven looking, it is still a French braid, and way better than anything I've managed before. The principles are sound, it's just the technique needs some refining. I think I need to do it in fewer sections, for one thing, so it looks smoother down the back of my head. (also my hair looks kind of gross, but that's just because I already heavy-oiled it for the night before I decided to try this.)

man, I really need a better camera )

I thought this would be fun to share - recipe from the LHC (original post was by Kimberlily, obviously, not me, and is quoted in full)

Kimberlily's Defrizz Spray

In a 4oz mister, mix the following:

2 tbsp aloe gel
1 tsp jojoba
1 tsp glycerin (you can leave it out if you don't have any)
essential oils of choice

Add distilled water until full, then shake. Spray can be used as a detangler, and it encourages wonderful waves especially when used for damp bunning. Tap water can be used, but distilled water is better since it will keep longer. I have hard water, so I never use tap water.

I don't just use it on my hair. Here are some other uses:

* If you omit the essential oils, it is a wonderful eye makeup remover. Just spritz on a cotton pad and swipe away your makeup.
* Keep it in the fridge in the summer for a refreshing moisturizing spritz after coming in from the sun.
* Spritz on your legs and use it for shaving if you're in a rush and have no time to shower.

Notes from me, [personal profile] masterofmidgets : I love this stuff. My mister bottle is a little smaller than this, so I had to do a bit of math to get the proportions right, but I got it fine in the end. I use Sweet Orange essential oil I got at Sunflower Market and it smells divine. I can't testify to how well it works for a shave lotion or a make-up remover, since I haven't tried that. But I spritz it into my wet hair after a shower and scrunch, and it makes my hair super sproingy. I also use a few sprays in the morning to liven up my ends after I take my braids out. And I spritz it into the air and walk through it for a nice light scent (since most perfumes kill me dead from allergies). Very nice stuff!

ETA: I do not use the optional glycerin. Because glycerin is a humectant, in a dry climate like New Mexico it actually works to pull moisture out of the hair to equalize it with the environment. Not good. But it works just as well without it.

You know, I'm willing to deal with a certain amount of the inconvenience that comes with long hair. I don't get all that bothered when it takes five hours to dry, or when it's windy out and I'm eating mouthfuls of it, or when I shut it in a car door and almost scalp myself. These things happen, whatever. But even I have to draw the line somewhere.

WHEN MY HAIR STARTS EATING LARGE INSECTS, THAT IS NOT FUCKING COOL.

Being out in the desert in the middle of the summer, we have a bit of a problem with flies in the house. Not just regular flies, either, these things are huge. And obnoxious - the ones in my room spend most of their time either hovering around my lamp being obscenely loud or dive-bombing my computer screen. And, quite frequently, my face. I HATE them and I think they are disgusting.

So one of them got into my room this afternoon and has been driving me crazy all evening, but mostly I'm trying to ignore it, since I'm too much of a wimp even to kill flies. This turned out to be a mistake. About the tenth time it flew into my face, I swatted it away, and when I didn't see it, I thought it had flown off. This was also a mistake, as I figured out when I went to finish braiding my hair.

When I realized that there was a giant fly caught in my hair, you could have heard me shrieking from a block away.

BE RIGHT BACK WASHING MY HAIR OUT WITH BLEACH.

If anything was ever going to make me cut my hair off, this would be pretty much at the top of the list. *shudders*

To remind myself of why it's still worth it, even with giant insects, here, have some pictures. (I've been taking a bunch this week because a) the light in my room is actually sort of decent and b) I needed to make a sig pic for LHC)

I did a craft! I made hairsticks, to be specific. I've been working on this intermittently since this weekend, and I finally have some finished products to show off.

So Sunday is apparently now '[personal profile] masterofmidgets is Useful' Day, because by some miracle I actually GOT SHIT DONE today. I know, I know, I'm as shocked as you are.

My dad needed some mint, so we visited my grandparents this afternoon. We got there right as they were walking out the door for a dinner at Popejoy, but I had a few minutes to talk to my grandma. She laid the guilt on for not calling her all week, and I acted properly contrite. She also told me that my birthday present is taking the train to Santa Fe so we can go to the new history museum up there. Needless to say, I am tremendously excited. Because museums are AWESOME. *wears geek hat* After she left, I spent the rest of the time playing with CD and talking my ...aunt? Step-aunt? I don't know how we are choosing to qualify this relationship. But she's cool.

I am endeavoring to turn [personal profile] colourofsaying into at least as much of an opera fan as I am, so after I got home I spent the rest of the afternoon sending her links to clips of my favorite operas on youtube. I think my effusive enthusiasm about Turandot and Eugene Onegin sunk in, and I may have made a convert out of her. *evil laughs* And I ended up downloading Song to the Moon from Rusalka and Au Fond du Temple Saint from The Pearl Fishers, so it was totally worth it. :D

After dinner (lettuce-wrapped meatballs and rice noodles with chile-lime sauce, so messy but so good!) I learned how to use an electric sander. Yeah. And I didn't hurt myself, astonishingly enough. My dad showed me how. I used it to sand down the ends of some 1/4' diameter wooden dowels to make hairsticks out of. I'm waiting now for the polyurethane stain on them to finish drying, but I think they are going to turn out really well. I wouldn't try to sell them for actual money, maybe, but they should look fine in my hair. I'm meeting up with my mom and Lisa on Tuesday to do a craft day, and I'll finish them then, at which point there will be pictures.

Tomorrow I'm back to doing fuck all and watching TV. Go me.

Three Things About Wednesday (ha, yes, I am rocking the lists lately)

1. My dad and I have a tentative agreement that I cook Mon/Wed, he cooks Tues/Thurs, and the weekends are up for grabs. Today was my turn, and I tried out a new orange beef recipe I found online. OM NOM NOM ORANGEY. I think it could have used more chile peppers, but then I like things scorching hot. Surprisingly though the 3 tablespoons of ginger was not too much. VERY GOOD WOULD NOM AGAIN.

2. Since I'm hanging around the house and not seeing anyone except my dad mostly, I'm taking the opportunity to experiment with my hair routine, since I don't have to worry about going out looking like a freakshow. Today's experiment: aloe vera+scrunching - unqualified success. Impressive since I hate hair gel and mousse and spray and basically anything that makes my hair feel sticky or stiff. Aloe vera makes my hair look awesome without doing that. There would be pictures, but my dad made me take a walk with him and it's about to thunderstorm, so the wind's like 30 mph. D:

3. Oh PAD. Stop trying to make me not hate you by having boykissing in your books. I'm still not going to read them, but now I'm going to be annoyed that no one will post the boykissing in SD2.0 *pouts*

3a. Um. I am pretty sure that this video wins everything forever. *hearts hearts hearts* I really feel like it needs to be shared.

I wasn't ready for my Japanese presentation this morning, so I emailed my sensei, said I was sick and not coming to class, and asked if I could go to her office later in the week to do it instead. Ten minutes later I realized I couldn't miss anymore classes without killing my grade, so I sucked it up, threw together a presentation on Japanese festivals in < half an hour, and went anyway.

It's been that kind of week. Month. Whatever. But I am so sick of bitching, so. Let's talk about something else. Like the Great Shampoo Bar Experiment! I've been meaning to review the latest set of bars I tried out, and this is as good a time as any. Just for reference, I'm still using Chagrin Valley bars.
  1. Carrot, Milk and Honey - I probably won't buy this bar again. I didn't think about the fact that it would have protein when I ordered it, from the goat's milk, and as I've said before, my hair is not much of a protein fan. The smell is very mild, but it's still pretty distinctly carroty, and I wasn't crazy about that either. Moisturizing-wise this is a middle-of-the-road bar, not too cleansing or too moisturizing, which did work okay for me. And on the bright side, this bar did make my hair ridiculously shiny - seriously, it looked like I had polished it. Very cool.
  2. Lavender and Spice - I think I bought this one because hanjuuluver was so crazy about it, but it didn't do much for me. Worked okay, but nothing spectacular, and given that I really disliked the spice scent, not a re-purchase. Recommended more for people who have a dry or easily irritated scalp, which isn't my problem - my scalp gets oily while my length get all dried out. Honestly, I don't remember this bar well enough to say positive or negative, which I guess is pretty telling in and of itself.
  3. Rosemary Lavender Aloe - this one is on my permanent buy list now! I really, really loved it. It's slightly on the moisturizing side, I think, and left my hair feeling really good and healthy. I got good curls - not as good as camomile citrus, but still quite good - and no dryness on my ends. Mostly I love the way this bar smells - I have to admit it's already become a bit of a comfort thing for me, and I'm saving the last third of my bar for the trip home, when I'll be all exhausted and stressed out and need it.
I won't have any more new bars until I get home to New Mexico, since I had the next batch I ordered sent to my dad's place instead of here. But when I do get home, I'll be able to try out the Babassu and Marshmallow and the Mud and Clay bars I bought, so I'm kind of looking forward to that.

OMG I HAVE CHOCOLATE PUDDING.

I am so excited about having pudding - real, good-quality pudding, not that horrible dining hall pudding that makes me fear for my life - it's a little sad. I've been eyeing it for ages and never quite made up my mind about getting it, since it looked so good but it's extra money, and it's junk food I don't really need. But today when I went grocery shopping I didn't get any new hair toys at Wal-Mart (even though they had a few really cute hairbands and barrettes) and I didn't spend 10 dollars on organic body lotion (even though it smelled fabulous) and I didn't stop at Sally's, and as a reward I decided to buy myself chocolate pudding. I'm now I'm almost scared to eat it because it looks so delicious.

I also have Canadian cheese, pita crackers, mac and cheese, pomegranate soda, and some ice cream bars so awesome the cashier complimented me on my choice of junk food. And apple cider vinegar - I always have to wonder a bit how that looks to the checkout guy. I mean, here I am, buying what is basically a long list of Foods For Someone Who Never Cooks, all snack foods and microwaveable junk, and then there by its lonesome, a bottle of vinegar. It is a bit odd! Though probably I'd get odder looks if he knew I buy it to use on my hair.

Even though I resisted temptation today, I really do need new hairtoys. I am getting bored of my scrunchies and terrycloth hairties and the flower pattern is almost worn off my plastic hairsticks. DDDD: But as soon as I get home I am dragging Hanjuuluver  to the Cool Awesome Rock Store - seriously, this place is the coolest ever if you an enormous dork, it has a bajillion kinds of rocks and beads and shit - and buying some neat beads to make Booster Gold/Blue Beetle hairsticks - I'm betting I can find some blue beetle and gold star beads pretty easy, and then I just have to get blank sticks and mount them. It should be a neat summer project. Neater would be Cap/Iron Man sticks, but those would be a little harder if I wanted to do more than just match colors. Although a set of red and gold and red white and blue sticks would still be pretty neat. *ponders*

I've always wanted to try hair-taping, because it sounds like a cute, practical hairstyle, but for one reason or another I never got around to it. Well, tonight I was watching Due South and I started thinking, you know, I've got first day hair that looks like rubbish, it doesn't matter if I play with it - maybe I should try hair-taping. So I did!

Pictures, and a handy tutorial )
masterofmidgets: hair (hair)
I made it through today well enough - religions class+lit paper conference - but more or less the second I walked through the door of my room, I got hit by this bone-deep exhaustion, so much so I didn't even have the energy to walk the ten feet across the room to move my computer from my desk back to my bed, where I usually work. I think I was really dehydrated, too, which probably didn't help. But mostly it was just...god, this week.

But now I'm feeling super-duper indulgent. I checked my mailbox while I was killing time before my paper conference, and my new package of CV goodies finally came. No shampoo bars this time, sadly, because I'm still only halfway through the batch I bought during spring break ([personal profile] colourofsaying , remind me to do reviews for the new bars I tried!), but I bought some new soap bars. The honey butter makes me feel moisturized just looking at it, it's so rich. And I got another goat milk and honey bar, since it/my skin=OTP. And Honey and Cornmeal. I had to limit myself to just the first page of bars when I ordered, or I never would have been able to make up my mind. Oh, and a little tin of tangerine and grapfruit flavored pumpkin oil lip balm, mmmmm.

So the last week or so my hair has been really really tangly and kind of weird feeling, even though I haven't changed anything in my routine and was using my typical metric fuckton of conditioner. And I started thinking, hey, maybe this is that build-up problem some of the people on the shampoo bar thread complain about after a while of using just shampoo bars. The standard advice for that is to do a clarifying wash, of course, just like with any other build-up, so I resolved to do that.  I've also been meaning for awhile to do a diagnostic clarifying wash - it's a really good way, apparently, to figure out wtf is up with your hair by getting every last trace of everything out of it - so it seemed logical to just combine the two and get it over with all at once.

Using a liquid shampoo felt very odd after so many months of using the bars. But so luxuriant - I did three lathers, to get all the clarifying goodness, and by the end I was getting just gobs of suds, way more than I'm used to. Add that to scrubbing the rest of me with my Honey and Cornmeal bar, and man, I feel all squeaky-clean and nice now. Except that my hair looks horrendous, because part of the diagnostic clarifying wash is that you can't use conditioner. HOLY FUCK. It's...nice to know some things never change? Even if those things are that without conditioner my hair is capable of devouring small mammals. At least it smells nicely of lavendar. I got to use the tail-end of a bottle of Kiss My Face I had from where-the-fuck-ever and forgot about, instead of boring Suave. Mmmmmmm.

And now, Due South, yay!

masterofmidgets: hair (hair)
So, I think the highlight of my day today was getting chocolate at work - which isn't too bad for a Wednesday? And it was really good chocolate - my boss had leftover Easter candy, and everyone who was on goal by 8.00 got some. I got a marshmallow filled chocolate egg. Would have been better with dark chocolate, but still so, so good. And then after work I called my dad so I'd have something to do on the walk home and we got into an argument about whether the country should go back on the gold standard. Um. He's very, very libertarian? But I think a lot of the positions he espouses (like the violent overthrow of the Establishment into anarchy) in debate he doesn't actually believe in in anything other than a rhetorical sense. And he can't vote, anyway, so. But it was a pretty interesting conversation.

Milestone: the longest parts of my hair are (finally) tailbone length, when they are sopping wet. Of course, I'm still not-quite hip length when it's dry, thank you curly hair, but still, I'm making progress! I am trying to decide if I want to get to tailbone length and maintain for awhile, to get less taper/healthier ends before I try to make it to classical length, or just do it all in one go and let my hemline catch up in a year or so. Decisions, decisions...

Poetry: our lecture today on modernism, leading into The Wasteland for next week, was absolutely fascinating. I love my professor so much. And I learned some really neat things about the development in the 20th century of the interaction between poet and reader, and how writers write for a popular audience vs writing for the initiate, the people who already get poetry. At the very end of the class my prof mentioned this poet, and I think she's pretty neat.

I Go Back To May 1937 by Sharon Olds

I see them standing at the formal gates of their colleges,
I see my father strolling out
under the ochre sandstone arch, the
red tiles glinting like bent
plates of blood behind his head, I
see my mother with a few light books at her hip
standing at the pillar made of tiny bricks,
the wrought-iron gate still open behind her, its
sword-tips aglow in the May air,
they are about to graduate, they are about to get married,
they are kids, they are dumb, all they know is they are
innocent, they would never hurt anybody.
I want to go up to them and say Stop,
don’t do it—she’s the wrong woman,
he’s the wrong man, you are going to do things
you cannot imagine you would ever do,
you are going to do bad things to children,
you are going to suffer in ways you have not heard of,
you are going to want to die. I want to go
up to them there in the late May sunlight and say it,
her hungry pretty face turning to me,
her pitiful beautiful untouched body,
his arrogant handsome face turning to me,
his pitiful beautiful untouched body,
but I don’t do it. I want to live. I
take them up like the male and female
paper dolls and bang them together
at the hips, like chips of flint, as if to
strike sparks from them, I say
Do what you are going to do, and I will tell about it.

I always get a bit worried when my various obsessions start crossing over with each other. For example! I was over on the Long Hair boards and there was a thread talking about geeky hairsticks, and now I really want some, like, desperately. I can think of so many different kinds that would be just incredibly, geekily awesome: TARDIS and Dalek sticks! Sticks mounted with 20-sided dice! Sticks with Enterprise or Serenity dangles! I even started trying to work out in my head how I could make comic book hairsticks, a truly challenging problem since most characters don't have emblems that would lend themselves readily to be mounted on the end of a short piece of wood. I was thinking maybe Legion Ring or Lantern Ring dangles, or maybe batarangs/birdarangs? And Tony's arc reactor, sized appropriately, might look kind of cool - so would the Blue Beetle Scarab, and maybe even Steve's shield. Gaaaah my brain make it stop!

I did see some totally awesome steampunky hairsticks on Etsy, that were topped by antique watch gears, but they were sold before I had a chance to seriously consider them, or even snag the picture that was up on the seller's page. Woe is me. They were pretty epic. I've been keeping an eye out in Etsy ever since for similarly wicked cool stuff.

While not doing that, I've been rewatching Angel. I saw the whole series back in high school, because it was on TNT at the same time I got home every day from class, and I of course have a huge and passionate love for anything Joss. And when I saw last week that Andy Hallett had died, well. I loved Lorne so much in that series, and it was terrible to hear, but it did really make me want to see him again. So, rewatching! But now I really want fic. The only problem? I have no idea how to find the kind of fic I want to read, or even if it exists. My normal channels are useless here! I know it sounds weird coming from me, Ms. Batman and Superman are gay for each and the Winchester boys are totally having sex, but I don't really want to read slash! I mean, I ship Angel/Spike, because DUH. But I don't really want to read it. Mostly, I want to read silly cracky gen about Angel being socially awkward and wearing really ugly shirts. And maybe some stuff about their relation to the police that isn't Angel/Kate - like his apartment getting searched and them finding his fridge full of blood and freaking out? Oh, and fic about how every time they go clubbing everyone thinks he's gay. What can I say, it amuses me.

ETA: I bet something like these earrings, reattached to a generic hair stick, would work really well. And I could probably make Cap and Iron Man or Booster and Beetle chibis out of polymer clay. Um. I might have found a summer project?
masterofmidgets: hair (hair)
So this quarter I'm going to be wearing my hair up a lot more. Partly because it's better for my hair, but mostly because I have an 11.00am class M-Th, and I straight out refuse to get up an hour early so that I will have time to wash my hair before class. Just not happening. But since I don't want to wash my hair every day either (I want to stick to the M-W-Sat wash schedule I have, it seems to work well), and by the third day my hair is itchy and flat and frizzy and ick, updos it is!

Given that, I've spent a lot of break practicing my updos, so that I don't have to fall back on the same-old same-old stand-bys of braided pigtails and messy Chinese buns. I mean, what's the point of having long hair if I'm not going to have fun with it? So here's a few pics (with links to tutorials, because I'm nice that way) of new updos I've figured out to do lately.

Hair pics under the cut! )

Also! Check out my super-awesome new hairsticks in the pictures up there! I really love the metal fleur-de-lis one, it's quite pretty, but the plastic ones (which have a neat flower pattern that isn't really visible) aren't half bad either.

masterofmidgets: hair (hair)
Aaaaah, the shampoo bar threads on LHC are so enabling! I was going to wait until I got back to school to order more shampoo bars, since I have enough of one bar left to make it about a week or so, but I totally caved tonight after reading everyone talking about their bars. At least this way I'll have the bars ready and waiting for me in my mailbox when I get back to school? They were mostly out of the ones I bought last time, so I'm trying out three new bars - lavendar rosemary aloe, carrot milk and honey, and lavendar spice (on [livejournal.com profile] hanjuuluver 's encouragement - she was not exactly helping me restrain myself!) - and I got another sample bar of the summer sunshine, so I can be sure of having at least one I know my hair likes. I also got two soap bars - goat milk oatmeal honey and herbal mist - and a nylon soap sack (that was just pure impulse). My skin is so easily irritated by everything, and I'd like to see if using a milder, more natural, less chemical-y soap will help clear up my eczema. Would be nice!

While I'm on the topic, I meant to review the other shampoo bars I used, but I never got around to it. Now is as good a time as any, yes?

Extra Honey, Beer and Egg - too much protein for my hair, which is rather curly and dry - probably good for people with thinner, straighter hair than me who could use the protein treatment. It made my hair really thick, which was awesome, and I might keep it to use once a month or so for a health boost, but it yanked all the curl right out and made my hair feel a bit odd. It really does not smell like beer, though I'm at a loss to say what it does smell like.

Summer Sunshine - I ordered another bar of this because they were out of the camomile and citrus, but I really prefer that one, and they aren't that different. The smell is really pleasant, nice and light (I am still wishing they made one that makes me smell like I soaked my head in orange juice- huge citrus addict here!) and it lathers well. My ends don't feel as well mosturized with this one, which is a big downside for me. I did get plenty of curl, though not as much as the camomile. So, okay, good but not great.

Cafe Moreno - love, love, love! I would have ordered a full sized bar this time around if they hadn't been sold out and waiting to cure for another month. Definitely my favorite after the camomile. It lathers up so thick and smooth, and just feels really nice going on my head. It's very mosturizing (though not even their most mosturizing), which was great for me, and my hair felt fabulous after. The smell is quite strong, but more spicy - a bit like cloves? - than like coffee. I liked it, but it might be a bit much for some people. I didn't think it made my hair any darker/more brunette-ish, but I didn't really care about this.

masterofmidgets: hair (hair)
I like having dyed hair - if nothing else, it tends to be a good conversation opener - but I really hate the actual process of dyeing it. When Linda does it for me it's relatively painles, but doing it on my own...oof. Labor-intensive! Plus it's so messy. This may just be the long hair thing, but I always manage to make a huge mess of our little sink alcove thing when I do my hair. The whole basin ends up purple, there's water all over the floor, etc etc. Plus I have dye all over my arms where the gloves didn't go up far enough.

I leave it on for awhile to try to get the color to last longer, and I look like an idiot while I do - most of my hair is pulled back in a ponytail, and my bangs are rolled up in tin foil and bobby-pinned to my head. I can't leave my room while it's setting, because, hey, look like an idiot, and I'm superparanoid about getting dye on things so I can't get comfortable doing stuff on my computer and whatever. And the chemical-y scent of the dye makes me a little sick to my stomach, not crazy about that either.

It's almost enough to make me want to give it up and stop dyeing. Almost, but not quite enough! Having purple hair is just too much fun. Although I am a little worried about how it will turn out this time around. I wanted the color to be a little more purple than the violet Manic Panic I'm using, so I mixed in some of my leftover purple from the brand I used before - but I was half through before I thought of it. I'm hoping I don't end up with one side of my hair a different color than the other...that might be a bit odd even for me. D:

At least I have Nightwing to read while I'm doing this. It makes me so sad this book was canceled - Dick is so adorably awesome! And OMG pretty. Not just pretty, but in a blue-and-black bodysuit so tight it looks painted on. It's a GOOD thing.

I was really bored tonight, but too tired from last night's middle of the night drama to feel like doing much of anything. I played Sims for like three hours, which, you know, always fun. Especially because my Legacy house right now is laughably dysfunctional - my 7th Gen heir, Mari, slept with her aunt (they, uh, aren't tagged as family for some reason), then got a girlfriend and moved her in, leading to much jealousy and drama. Every time the aunt and the girlfriend are in the same room they end up attacking each other. *grins* I love my Sims sometimes.

But I can only play Sims for so long before my computer throws a bitchfit, so I had to move on to something else. Which ended up being playing with my hair. Fun! And I have pictures!

1. Basic Cinnamon Bun (uh...sort of)

2. Chinese Bun

3. Braided Bun

Next goal: learn how to French Braid.

ETA: also got a few pics of my hair down. First two are from a wash day, so my hair's actually really curly; second two it's only wavy b/c non-wash day+lots of combing to do buns.

more pics here! )

Okay, so I totally caved to temptation. Even though Friday is a strict non-washing day this quarter, I couldn't resist trying  my new shampoo bars right away, so I went ahead and hopped in the shower anyway.

I'm just going to come right and say it: HOLY WOW SHAMPOO BARS. I still have three bars to try out, obviously, and I'll yammer on about those as I go through them. And I'm going to reserve final opinion until I've had a chance to see what my hair looks like on the second and third days after washing, and after using the bars for a few times in a row, since word on the street is that it takes some people a while to adjust to natural shampoos. But so far, I'm going to call this experiment a success in concept at the very least.

I started out with the Camomile and Citrus bar, since that seems to be pretty popular with people. Also it smells great - not as citrusy as I was hoping, since I have a dire citrus addiction, but very clean and mild and pleasant. I followed the instructions from the Chagrin Valley site and the Long Hair Comm pretty closely (first time is not the time to improvise): rub the bar on your hair, moving back from the hairline to the nape, and down the length, and then work up a nice lather, then rinse and repeat. It's a little more work than a liquid shampoo; it doesn't start lathering up just by looking at it funny. But once you get it worked in it does lather up really well. :D

After I rinsed for the second time, my hair felt really, really clean but kind of weird. Sort of squeaky, or even waxy - I could barely run my hand down it because it stuck against the hair. Luckily, I was prepared for this, and I had my vinegar rinse all ready to go. My measurements aren't very exact (I don't have a measuring spoon, only larger and smaller kitchen spoons), but I put about 3, maybe 3.5 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in one of my empty conditioner bottles (I keep them after I finish them because I water my conditioner down a little to make it last longer) and filled it most of the rest of the way with water, then poured that solution on my hair. Left it in while I conditioned (supposedly a lot of people don't need to condition with shampoo bars, but my hair without conditioner is...scary), then rinsed it all out. As soon as the vinegar touched my hair the waxy feeling started to go away; by the time I was out of the shower, my hair felt great.

And now that it's dry (five hours later), I'm just blown away by how amazing my hair feels. Like, it is so soft and shiny, and thicker than usual, and I am getting crazy amounts of curl definition - resilient curls, even, that don't start to fall out the second I touch them. And for the first time in ages my ends don't feel all scratchy and dry and awful, even though I didn't use any oil this time around. It is FANTABULOUS. I really hope my hair looks good tomorrow, because if my hair is going to look and feel like this with shampoo bars, I do not want to give them up.

I also like how natural these bars are. They aren't full of petrochemicals and preservatives; I can recognize and pronounce every ingredient on the label, and it's not a long list of ingredients, at that. I'm not buying plastic bottles that will sit in a dump for the rest of forever; the bars come in an environmentally-friendly, bio-degradeable tiny paper bag. They aren't made by a massive, evil corporation that doesn't pay its employees a living wage or offer them any benefits; it's made by a woman named Ida and her husband. They live in Ohio. If you email them about the product, they will actually talk to you. I like the idea of supporting small, nature-friendly, women-run businesses. We need more of them.

So yeah, I may be very close to being sold on these shampoo bars.
