This is Cosette! So named because she's rather timid and shy, but I think once she gets used to me she's be quite sweet. And because she was abandoned (and almost eaten!), but now she's been (hopefully) happily adopted.

Right now I'm lying on the floor watching her explore the living room.

The Gay Hamlet Ficathon I've seen mentioned a few places this weekend is making me lol, since just a few days ago [personal profile] colourofsaying and I were having this conversation:

[personal profile] masterofmidgets: we may have just reached critical nerd mass btw
[personal profile] colourofsaying: I thought we were doing that earlier when we were talking about the psychological reasons why Horatio would hook up in a self-flagellating relationship with Fortinbras
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: I would also love to see the fic where Fortinbras is super awkward and miserable taking over Denmark because a) EVERYONE BEFORE HIM DIED HORRIBLY and b) everyone still left and especially Horatio is constantly sighing over what a better king Hamlet would have made if he hadn't been bugfuck crazy
[personal profile] colourofsaying: And he's like "I thought this would be fun!"
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: it's a very challenging political state for a young king at the best of times
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: let alone when most of your support people are traumatized from Claudius or used to dealing with Hamlet and his crazy
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: and Horatio should be helping him
[personal profile] colourofsaying: and he sort of is!
[personal profile] colourofsaying: but he's also spending a lot of time crying on battlements.
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: but he has a tendency to sigh pointedly and start talking about how /Hamlet/ would have done it that way
[personal profile] colourofsaying: ...Fortinbras has a completely unrequited crush, doesn't he?
[personal profile] colourofsaying: he writes these long letters to his uncle about how smart and mature and solid and dependable Horatio is, and how he's also an amaaaazing fighter, he moves so gracefully, and his hair flutters...
[personal profile] colourofsaying: and his uncle is all '...riiiiight.'
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: it is a tragic and doomed love
[personal profile] colourofsaying: since Horatio will... never really get over Hamlet.
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: and you know what that means
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: time for tragic porn!
[personal profile] colourofsaying: I would also like Horatio to more or less offer to have hatesex, and Fortinbras to be all '...no. I am sort of in love with you, and that would not be healthy for your brain, and I love you too much to allow you to fuck with yourself.'
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: although I would settle for Horatio going in for masochistic hatesex and Fortinbas being all 'wait, what? *sadface*' but going along with it because it's the only way to get close to Horatio. So both of them would get what they want, in a way that makes them both miserable. I AM A TERRIBLE PERSON.

Completely unrelated to our terminal nerdery, but my mom has a new bunny. Which is awesome! The apartment has been sadly rabbit-less since the Toby bunny died in the spring (of old age, bless his tough little fuzzy butt), and the last month or so, she's put out the word that she was interested in getting another. Well, she turned up to a job this week and her client answered the door with a rabbit in her arms, so problem solved. New bunny is named Lily (or possibly Izzy) and is absolutely precious - and only about 20% the size of the previous bunny. I have pictures!

Not the most relaxing of weekends ever, to be honest. Nothing catastrophic, just careening around between minor crises while I was staying at my mom's.

On Saturday night the power cord to my laptop, which has been increasingly tetchy the last few weeks, decided it hated all outlets and refused to work no matter what I did. Which of course immediately sent me into a flail - I handled Apartment Roommate setting the toaster on fire way better than I handle computer problems I don't know how to fix. We ended up making an emergency run to Best Buy at 9.30pm to get a new cord. So problem resolved, aside from the part where I feel guilty for making my mom spend the money on me (even though we decided just to count it as my birthday present, since she hadn't given me one yet). Oh well.

Yesterday afternoon we had a cat crisis. That one was actually kind of scary. My mom and I were lying on the bed watching a movie together, and we noticed that the Oliver-cat, who was lying at the end of the bed, was breathing really heavy, panting like a dog, with his mouth open and his tongue hanging out. My mom tried to calm him down, but he was really twitchy - rolling on the bed, shaking his head, licking himself all over, like he knew hurt somewhere but couldn't figure out where or why. Really frightening, especially since they don't have easy access to a vet down there, let alone on a Sunday. He's a semi-outdoor cat (theoretically he has access to the outdoors whenever he wants, but he's not crazy about the horses and now that he's older and moved several times he likes to stick really close to my mom), so best we can figure out, he got bitten or stung by something nasty while he was outside. Poor kitty. But my mom's been keeping me up to date and he seems to be alright today, so no permanent harm done, I guess. Just a bit of worry on our part.

*sigh* At least I got some kick-ass new boots at the thrift store. And it was good to see my mom (for the first time since my birthday), even if she did spend a lot of time telling me how I should be handling my job hunting. We got some nice couch time, and she showed me the glasses case she's making for me, because she's awesome that way. And since I don't have internet down there, I had more time to plan out ridiculous football related fanfic ideas and Softer World Remixes.

1. One of the first, best signs that autumn is approaching is when you go to the store and everything smells like roasting green chile.

2. It is possible to approximate a mancala board with an empty egg carton and a couple of sauce bowls. If, you know, you ever need an emergency mancala board.

3. There are pleasant ways to be unexpectedly woken up. Being clawed in the face by a madly scrambling cat is not one of them.

4. No amount of delicious food will ever make spending an afternoon with the boyfriend's horrible, boring, ignorant, racist family worthwhile.
masterofmidgets: (world cup fuck yeah)
We were going to go to the Folk Art Market in Santa Fe this weekend, which would have been pretty awesome, but due to various unforeseen roadbumps, that never quite happened. Instead I just spent the weekend bumming around the farm with my mom, reading and hanging out with the horses and walking around the neighborhood. And watching the World Cup final, of course. OMG SPAAAAAAIN ILU. Even if that was a nasty mess of a match. I DON'T CARE MY BABY CESC GOT TO PLAY AND SPAIN WON YAY.

I don't have any actual content to go here, my life being profoundly dull at the moment, so here, have a list!

Things That Are Cute: a lesson in pictures

Will I ever get sick of posting pictures of our pets? No. )
masterofmidgets: (oh new mexico)
Never let it be said that I missed an opportunity to post pictures of adorable fuzzy animals for you all. (This would have been part of my last post, but alas, I was at the library and didn't have access to a scanner, so you're getting it now.)

excessive adorableness under the cut )

So [personal profile] colourofsaying and I were talking, as we do, about fictional characters' pets and their names, and somehow the conversation turned in this direction:

[personal profile] colourofsaying: According to actor Misha Collins, the wardrobe of the character Castiel on the TV show Supernatural is based on that of John Constantine.
[personal profile] colourofsaying: Which makes one wonder - what sort of dog is Misha Collins?
[personal profile] masterofmidgets: ...huh
[personal profile] masterofmidgetsr: is he a big dog or a little dog?
[personal profile] colourofsaying: or Castiel

SO I OFFER EVIDENCE FOR OUR CONCLUSIONS:

pictorial evidence of a canine nature )

I rest my case.

My afternoon, in two easy pictures:

yay kitty snuggles )

Bailey is the pounciest kitten I have ever met, and the best at climbing onto high places and then falling off of them (when she forgets she is on the windowsill and tries to attack the cord pull, for example). Oliver is playing the grumpy old man who wants her off his lawn, but when he thinks no one is looking he stops chewing on her head and starts licking her instead, so I think he is more fond than he lets on. Meanwhile, the rabbit is off in the back playing with the horses. No, really.

Meet my second biggest reason for being excited about heading home next week (after, you know, seeing family and all):

OMGWTFKITTEN )
masterofmidgets: (oh new mexico)

So, I meant to post these pictures ages ago, when I actually took them, but then I got really busy and my life got really depressing and I never got around to it. But I don't have anything better to do tonight, so here I am.

pictures of horses under the cut :D )

masterofmidgets: hair (hair)
I've been taking a ton of pictures since I got new batteries for my camera, so hey, it's picspam time!

Puppy! )

Really Geeky Stuff! )

Hair! )

ETA: HEY WOW I JUST NOTICED THIS IS MY 500TH POST. That is insane. I remember when I used this account for nothing but reading fic and never posted at all. I can't believe it's been two years since I started really being on LJ. And now I love it (and you guys! You guys rock!) so much.
masterofmidgets: (wtf)
So now we have a hamster.

Like, I haven't seen my roommate in three days, and then out of nowhere she comes home and is all "HEY WE CAN HAS HAMSTER PLZ?" and while I'm blinking and being boggled she and her boyfriend were already on the floor putting the cage together.

The slightly less baffling version of this story is: her boyfriend lives on campus and has a bunch of pets, including at least one cat I know of and several hamsters. But one of the hamsters started killing the other ones, and he freaked out that all his hamsters were going to die, so he asked her to take one of them so it wouldn't be devoured. Not sure how long we will have it, but whatever, it's pretty cute. I got to play with it while they were setting the cage up, and it is all fuzzy and fat and absurd looking. What can I say, I'm easily won over.

I meant to get a bunch of shit done today, but between being totally wrecked from running around SF in the middle of the night and having to work a shift at the call center, I was totally useless and exhausted all evening. I accomplished nothing! Aside from reading comics and listening to songs about the space program. Hopefully tomorrow will be a little more productive.

I have a new entry for top position on my list of "Ways I Would Never Like to Be Woken Up Again, Thank You", even edging out having Envy and Roy dump water on my face: waking up to the sound a cat sitting on my stomach trying to hack up a hairball. Cause every good day starts with cat vomit!
But no, really, the cat didn't hack anything up on me, mostly because I shoved it violently off. However, that seems to have been indicative of the way today was going to go. Not a bad day, just one of those boring icky blah days when everything seems slightly off-kilter and unpleasant. So I choose to hide under a blanket and wait for it to go away. And reread Shoebox Project, of course.

masterofmidgets: (Default)
So, I guess today was the last time I'll see Roy until Christmas, since she's leaving for Indiana and her scary engineering school on Wednesday. And it's just...really, horribly depressing. All my friends are leaving, or have left - Al's in NC, Roy's leaving, Envy's back in school. It makes me think about how much things are going to change now - we won't see each other, we're going to get different friends, new interests, new lives. We probably won't ever be close the same way we were this year. I know it has to hapen, but still, it's hard to deal with. So I am not even going to think about it for the moment. I shall focus my mind on utter inanities instead.

Al and I had some random conversation yesterday about what kind of animals we would be. I'd kind of like to think I'm something really cool, like a jungle cat or something. If I'm really honest, though, I think I'm more like a labrador puppy - loud, messy, and overenthusiastic, with a tendency to get into everything and get worked up over nothing. Kind of annoying, but still loveable. I hope. Dunno.

While Roy and I were out, I bought a new manga, Black Knight. Totally BL porn, and quite lovely, really. I hate manga that have a wonderful, interesting plot but you can never get into to it because the art is so bad or weird that it keeps distracting you. A lot of the BLU yaoi stuff is done in a veeeeeery shojo, angular, long and slender style that doesn't appeal to me at all - Junjo Romance being a prime example. I guess for all my yaoi tendencies, I really am a shonen girl at heart; I like lots of action with my sex, a real plot, even if it's silly, and a simple, less exaggerated art style. I think that's why I prefer the early Gravitation volumes to the later ones - the mangaka's style changed a lot, and I preferred the earlier stuff with the more "normal" character designs. But Black Knight looks good - pretty, not too girly artwork, and it's about a prince and his bodyguard, so there's plenty of action. We'll see.
