1. Go to page 77* (or 7) of your current manuscript.
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines – sentences or paragraphs – and post them as they’re written.
4. Encourage other people to do it!

From a short story I finished this summer, now very very slowly revising.

Alex bites his lip. It isn’t impossible that the man he thought he saw ducked out of view before Lauren could catch a glimpse of him. Not impossible.

“Nah,” he says. “Thought I saw something out my window, that’s all. Probably staring at my computer for too long, you know?”

Lauren nods slowly. “Well, I’ll keep a look-out for anything weird,” she says. “Excepting you, of course.”

Back inside his apartment, Alex double-checks the locks on his window and the chain and deadbolt on the front door, and after some thought, wedges a chair underneath the door handle for good measure. He isn’t sure how much good it would do, but it makes him feel a little better. He still twitches at every sound the shifting plaster makes in the wall, every bone-grating scrape of tire treads in the parking lot, until he falls exhausted into sleep.

"I found that many addicts of the occult pursued that path in their search for enlightenment."*

...well, that sounds promising. Or possibly terrifying, hard to say.

Bleargh, I still have the plague. I am...not as much feeling better as getting to the place where I can still the possibility of better on the distant horizon. Maybe tomorrow I will start to feel like a human being again. I even begged off the commitment of working for my grandma tomorrow - even if I am feeling better I don't think I'll be up to doing that much, and my uncle would probably just try to quarantine me anyway so I don't breathe around Tiny Cousin. Whatever. I shall continue to lay about and play with my cookbook software instead.

Since I don't have the wherewithal for real content, here's a meme [personal profile] colourofsaying tagged me with.

♔ If you've been tagged, you must write your answers in your own LJ and replace any question that you dislike with a new question.
♔ Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.

(Not tagging anyone, because that's too much work. Blah.)

1. What song are you currently addicted to?
Jonathan Coulton's The Princess Who Saved Herself. And Shawn Hlookoff's She Could Be You. ...shut up. I marathoned Kyle XY last week and it's a really addicting melody after awhile.

2. What books are you currently reading?
I've been working this summer on reading/rereading ever book Tamora Pierce has ever written. Right now I'm on The Woman Who Rides Like A Man and Bloodhound. I've never read the Beka Cooper books; I like them a lot more than I was anticipating, given that I'm not overly enamoured of first person. But it's good! I'm also reading TA Barron's Lost Years of Merlin series and McKillip's In The Forests of Serre. Non-fiction wise, I'm reading Francesca de Grandis' Goddess Initiation, very slowly.

3. What was the last movie you saw?
Iron Man 2 at the dollar theater on Sunday with my mom and the boyfriend. Still as fun as the first time. RDJ remains painfully hot in little hoodies and elbow sleeves. Before that, Despicable Me, which was precious

4. Anise or cinnamon?
Anise and cinnamon together! Mmmm, bizcochitos.

5. Cats or dogs?
Both! I just love animals, and we've always had both. But I don't think I'm responsible enough for a dog, so I'll probably be a cat person while I'm single.

6. What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?
You may have noticed, but I cannot stop talking about Doctor Who. Aaaaah, I love Eleven SO MUCH. The new Sherlock series on BBC is impressing me with how quick the fandom's taken off, given we only got three episodes. Wonderful porn, but it needs more h/c. I'm also horrendously addicted right now to a Korean drama called Life is Beautiful - it's about a huge extended family that runs a hotel/diving tours on Jeju Island. There are approximately 11 million main characters and I am massively invested in all of them. But especially the serious oldest son, who is a) incredibly gorgeous and b) has the show's main dramatic arc, which is about the family trying to marry him off while he tries to keep them from finding out that he is gay and in a relationship with his photographer friend. I keep meaning to do an epic picspam post about how Tae Sub/Kyung Soo is the greatest thing ever and you should all watch this, but I haven't gotten around to it.

7. What's your favorite character/band member/actor etc?
Not sure I have one...I don't tend to notice actors or singers much. But I do love David Tennant and John Barrowman. And Sandra Oh. And Vienna Teng!

8. What side of the bed do you sleep on?
I either sprawl across the entire bed, or end up jammed in the corner closest the wall in a little curled up ball. I am an action sleeper.

9. What was the last thing you bought?
shampoo and leave-in conditioner at the health food store.

10. Would you rather date a good singer, or a good cook?
A good singer. I like people to be impressed with my cooking. And I can't sing at all, so I'm always really in awe of people who can keep in tune and have it sound good.

11. If you could only listen to one band or singer for the rest of your life who would it be?
Dar Williams, maybe. Heather Alexander. Seanan Mcguire. Any of my favorite female singers who have written a lot of songs, so I wouldn't get bored of the same songs over and over.

12. What do you do to change your mood?
I bake. Or watch mindless, fun television where nothing permanently bad happens. Or meditate, if I'm really upset and need to recollect.

13. What was the last meal you ate?
Leftover taquitas. I can't usually eat when I'm sick, so I've just been picking at whatever's in the fridge.

14. Do you want to learn another language?
I would like to re-learn Chinese, since I don't really remember any of it. And I'd like to learn Russian. And Welsh, although that will never happen.

15. Five things you can't live without.
books, the internet, my bed, my family, music
16. Find the closest book currently sitting near you and flip to page 54. What is the first sentence of the second paragraph?

"Chuang-tze, a classic writer on the Way of the Dao, tells of the life of a chef."

17. If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
Right this second? Back to bed. The more general now? I would really like to visit London. I've never been to Europe, and that seems a good (and interesting!) place to start.

18. What are you looking forward to?
getting back to California and seeing my Stanford friends. Setting up house-keeping (and decorating with ridiculous posters!) in my new apartment. The Genre Fiction class I'm taking. :)

19. What is playing out of your speakers, right now?
Futurama clips. I've got too much of a headache still to focus on music, but dialogue is easier for some reason. And Futurama doesn't take a lot of work to enjoy.

Year End Meme: The first sentence of the first entry each month of 2009

January:
NEW YEAR'S FEAST OM NOM NOM.

February:
Last Sunday I did this meme! And since my flist is awesome, you guys figured out almost all of the pairings I used.

March:
Have acquired several volumes of Green Lantern Corps. Lingering anger mollified by lots of Guy punching things and/or people.

April:
*flails* Guess who my English professor is?

May:
Whoo, first post from my shiny Open Beta paid account on Dreamwidth.

June:
You know, I distinctly remember when I was back in high school never getting migraines. That was really nice.

July:
Never have I been so glad that I no longer live with my grandma as when I realized that, with a 5-day forecast of 90F as the low temp and a minimum humidity of 25%, I will be in a house with a man who TURNS THE AIR CONDITIONER ON.

August:
Stayed up all night playing Sims and then got up early to go over to my mom's for the afternoon.

September:
They took my grandfather back to the hospital yesterday because he was in a lot of pain and they couldn't deal with it at the nursing home.

October:
I was going to post an exercise I wrote this week about Fox and Jamie, and then I realized no one would know who they were because I never posted the original Fox and Jamie story.

November:
I am home, hanjuuluver is safely on the plane back to NM, and the con is over.

December:
Living in the dorms, I always worry about the protocol for listening to Christmas music early in December.

I haven't been doing a lot of introspection about this year, because, well, this year kind of sucked brass monkey balls. As far as I'm concerned, this summer never even happened. 2009 can kiss my ass, and I won't be sorry to boot it out the door tonight. But, you know, it wasn't all awful. I made some great friends this year, online and offline. I wrote some stuff I'm pretty proud of. I declared my major. I have a better idea of what I want to do the next couple of years than I did this time last year. I survived, and that's the important thing. And hopefully 2010 will be full of more of the good stuff and less of the bad stuff.

Happy New Year!
masterofmidgets: (a perfume ad?)
OH GOD SO MUCH PROCRASTINATING. It's not even anything important or hard, like a paper. I just really don't feel like working at all, even thought I know these workshop comments will only take me a little while. Possibly I am still mentally distracted from the new Booster Gold out today. So: meme!

Name a fandom and I'll tell you 3 pairings I love, 2 pairings I consider shipping, and 1 pairing I hate.

Don't have anything of even the vaguest relevance to say, so here's the "Post Your Desktop!" meme for you.

cut for big ass picture )

A few things of note:

My desktop is never this organized. But I had to make a little window for Kirk to look through last week when I changed to this background, so I cleared out a bunch of random files and pictures and stuff while I was at it.

I just installed Skype tonight so I can talk to [personal profile] colourofsaying  while she's in Japan. My username is mirrormasque9.

Yes, I have a lot of Sims stuff, I know. I've been playing it a fuckton this summer, and I'm trying to get my custom content organized.

The reason I have a screencap of my iTunes saved on my desktop is because at a certain point I had 6.66 GB of music and I was unduly amused by the idea of having Satan's playlist.

In the Torchwood radio show, Ianto gets the team into the hadron reactor by telling them he is the Ambassador of Wales. Because he is that awesome! Gwen is his sexy wife. And Jack is his manservant he is boffing on the side. ;D (also this is a misquote, but I didn't realize until a month after I started using it)

Tiny!Superman is tiny! From the Sins of Youth JLA/Young Justice crossover arc where Klarion (bum bum bum) the Witch Boy turns the Justice League into tiny children and Young Justice into grown-ups. The first splash page has so many iconable bits - tiny Superman, tiny Flash racing tiny Jay Garrick!Flash, tiny broody Batman...*DEAD OF CUTE*

asldkjk;l'flkj SO PRETTY. This is art from The Cave of Two Lovers episode of Avatar. The two lovers are from rival tribes, and they meet together at the mountain between their settlements. Then the man is killed in the war. In her grief, the woman invents earth-bending and ends the war. I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH.

D'awww, John is a sad puppy. I don't remember if I was looking through [livejournal.com profile] face_of_joe specifically for an pic to make into an icon, or if I was just impressed by how pathetic and adorable he looks in that one. But I do love that Joe Flanagin has a whole comm devoted to the goofy/cute/hot/bizarre faces he makes.

*grins* My first-ever gif! In retrospect, I should have used a different font, but hey, can't change it now. The text is, of course, one of the mottos of the late, great [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily (the other is "at scans_daily, it's never just you" :D ), which pretty sums up my entire attitude to fandom. The pairings are, in order: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard (from s4 Miller's Crossing), Captain America/Iron Man (the infamous hug-and-fly from Young Avengers), Blue Beetle/Booster Gold (from BG 10, break my heart why don't you!), and Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones (from TW s2 To The Last Man).

masterofmidgets: (ask me later)
Ugh. I fell asleep pretty much the second I got back from class, and I'm just now waking up. I really hate sleeping in the daytime, it always throws my brain horribly out of whack. I wake up all groggy and brain-sticky and too-hot feeling and my body feels all sluggish and wrong and just bleh. HATE. So, since I can't get my brain to turn on and function, here's a meme.

  1. Make a list of 5 things you can see without getting up.

    • My roommate, who is not freaking the fuck out about interviews for the first time in days
    • our stolen sofa that we can't figure out how to get rid of (it took 5 people and some very creative geometry to get it in here to begin with)
    • My Sephiroth plushie. He looks pissy, and it amuses me.
    • my mini-fridge, which is piled up on top with boxes and (clean) dishes and non-perishable junk food stuffs
    • Patricia McKillip's Riddlemaster trilogy. Rereading for the third time - maybe this go around I'll actually finish it.
  2. How do you style your hair?
Just started trying out Chagrin Valley shampoo bars and they are love and awesome. After that is a vinegar rinse and a metric fuckton of Suave conditioner (yay cheap), and then I let it airdry and wear it down. Second day it gets lightly brushed to get rid of all te fuzzy that escaped my sleep braids, third day (if I'm going for a third non-wash day) it gets worn up in braids or (once I learn how!) a bun.

  3. What are you wearing now?
My Wicked Tinkers t-shirt that I got at one of their concerts a few years ago. Everyone always thinks it's a Wicked shirt, which depending on my mood is really funny or really annoying. Also jeans.

  4. What’s your occupation?
College student! Also I work part time at the calling center, calling Stanford alumni and begging them to give us money. It is fun times.

  5. Do you nap a lot?
God no. Even when I was a little kid naps fucked with my head. Only if I'm so exhausted I'm about to keel over, and then I bitch about it.

  6. Who was the last person you hugged?
No idea? I'm not that touchy-feely with anyone at school. Probably my dad, when I was leaving at the end of break.

  7. What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?
Politics fandom - not even the slash - although it is there and it is beautiful and I love it so - but just the whole thing of what's going on in DC and what people are doing and what the president is saying and all the lovely pundits and their ideas and Raaaaahm my sloe-eyed congressional vixen.[livejournal.com profile] rahmbamarama  is probably to blame for this. Also SGA - lots of reading, not so much writing in there. And comics fandom of the Cap/IronMan and Boostle and Tim/Kon/Bart variety, which is mostly where I'm writing these days even if I'm reading and fanning in a lot of other pools.

  8. What was the last thing you ate today?
Chicken strips and fries at TAP, because I knew I was probably going to sleep through dinner (and I did!), but as soon as I'm done with this I'm going to go eat one of my pilfered scones and some cheese or something, because STARVING.

  9. What books are on your to-read list?
Riddlemaster trilogy - every time I read it I get about 100 pages further, but I've never finished it yet, even though it's fantastic. Also I have to read Mrs Dalloway and The Hours for my lit class in the next couple weeks. Now that I've finally gotten my Neil Gaiman kink on, I really need to read American Gods.

  10. What websites do you always visit when you go online?
Every time I turn my computer on, I have a list of things I have to go through and check: hotmail, school mail, livejournal flist, dailykos, fivethirtyeight, like five different web comics, and then the ljs of various people I'm not actually friends with but find interesting or amusing or awesome, like [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge .

  11. What was the last thing you bought?
A bunch of groceries at Trader Joe's. Expensive, but worth it for being nommable and good and for the generally nice feeling of having stuff in my fridge.

  12. What are you listening to right now?
Countdown with Keith Olbermann. I love him and I want to have his angry liberal babies. Heeeee. Also 2 Atoms In A Molecule by Noah and the Whale - I heard it in a McShep amv last week and it got horribly stuck in my head.

  13. What do you think about before you go to bed at night?
Most of the time, I entertain myself while falling asleep by writing silly, cracked-out, pointlessly fluffy canon-ignoring fanfiction in my head, the kind of stuff I like to think about but would never actually want to write (mostly because it wouldn't make any sense outside of my head).

  14. What was the last CD you bought?
I...have no idea. I haven't physically bought music in so long. I haven't even had a CD player since, like, junior year of high school...maybe senior year? So the last CD I bought was probably Awake, by L'arc en Ciel.

  15. What is your favourite weather, and why?
65-70 degrees, clear skies, a little bit of a breeze - lying on the grass and reading weather. I can't deal with temp extremes in either direction.
  16. If you could play any musical instrument, which one would you play?
I used to play the flute (so badly!), and the handbells (not badly!), and that was pretty cool, but I'd really like to be able to play either the harp or the dulcimer. Because I am an enormous Celtic-music geek.

  17. How are you?
Urgh, not very awake, and starving, and stressing out over the exam I have tomorrow. WHY DO THE SHORT WEEKS ALWAYS FAIL?

  18. What’s something you'd like to say to someone right now?
I would like to tell my roommate that she is driving me crazy with her freaking out and fighting with her boyfriend and crying and just generally being whiny and self-absorbed and annoying. But that would be so incredibly not cool of me, so no.

  19. What's one of your favorite movies?
Iron Man - I think it's pretty damn close to being exactly what I want out of a superhero movie. Lots of eye candy, lots of action, lots of fucking FUN, but with a nice dark edge to remind us that hey, Tony is crazy and fucked-up you know.

A few weeks ago, I got linked to this comm for something or other that said in their user info they would only approve your membership if your personal journal reflected Christian values and was free of inappropriate language. Mildly amused, I went and checked my journal - I don't think I could find a single entry on the page at the time that didn't have "fuck" in it at least once.

Yeah, I swear a lot. I once had a friend's father tell me I needed to watch my language because it wasn't ladylike. *rolls eyes* Whatever. I was raised by parents who swear and I do it too because it's easy and emphatic and feels good when I'm emotional and gets my point across when I need it to. It doesn't take the place of well-reasoned argument, but it doesn't make me any less articulate and intelligent, either.

[livejournal.com profile] masterofmidgets : fucking ladylike, bitches.

ETA: also I talk about gay porn a lot. That probably doesn't help my rating. XD

masterofmidgets: (jack harkness appreciates your ass)
Last Sunday I did this meme! And since my flist is awesome, you guys figured out almost all of the pairings I used. But, for the vaguely curious, here are the ones nobody guessed. Mostly because they were a) vague, or b) really obscure.

5. As long as one of them owes the other, they never have to stop.

Richard Mayhew/Marquis de Carabas, Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. I can very easily see Richard talking the Marquis into a relationship covertly by turning it into a extended series of reciprocal returnings-of-favors. Since the Marquis always takes what is owed him, and doesn't like owing anyone else.

6. He understands what it's like to be the sidekick.

Dick Grayson (Nightwing)/Roy Harper (Arsenal), DCU. The original, iconic boy-sidekicks. They are so gay for each other it is barely subtext. I mean, it's DICK, so everyone is so gay for him it's barely subtext, but Roy takes it to an extra, super-gay level. They are good for major angst (Dick's Batman issues, Roy's Ollie issues and heroin abuse, the apparent huge clusterfuck that is the Outsiders), and incredibly schmoopy domestic fluff of the Lian Has Two Daddies variety. Because she SHOULD and she DOES.

10. They'd make one beautiful baby.

Zoe/Wash, Firefly (and Serenity). I was so disappointed that no one guessed this! Especially since it's an indirect quote right out the series. And it is a true, true quote, because Gina Torres is one lovely lady, and I have quite the soft spot for Alan Tudyk. And you know, I don't ship het often, but. If you fuck with my Zoe/Wash, I will fuck you up. Because they are gorgeous and sweet and totally in love and fight like real couples but resolve it in a way that actually involves them working through their issues and LOVE THIS SHIP SO MUCH. Ahem.

13. He brings him flowers from every mission.

Evan Lorne/David Parrish, Stargate: Atlantis. This ship is surpassed only by John Hart/PC Andy in total non-canonosity. I think in five seasons of SGA, Lorne and Parrish are on-screen together for a grand total of something like 10 minutes. But still, I love it! I have this working theory ([livejournal.com profile] telyanofcelore can back me up on this) that for a lot of series, you have two big pairings. And the first is the OTP - the main ship that is full of drama and angst and break-ups and mad declarations of love and insane plots to get back together and near-death snogging and all that good stuff we love oh so much. And the second pairing is the pairing of fluffy bunny love. They don't have angst and misery and suffering; they are just cute and happy and adorably married. Lorne/Parrish is my SA fluff ship. It warms my crusty bitter heart.

ETA: CAN I KILL MY ROOMMATE PLEASE? WHY ARE THERE SO MANY PEOPLE IN MY ROOM? WHY ARE THEY TALKING? *HATES*

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 56.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next seven sentences in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

Hours and hours she had spent on it and it was nearly finished. Would I be lonely? she asked and I said 'No,' looking at the colours. Hours and hours and hours I thought.

This convent was my refuge, a place of sunshine and of death where very early in the morning the clap of a wooden signal woke the nine of us who slept in the long dormitory. We woke to see Sister Marie Augustine sitting, serene and neat, bolt upright in a wooden chair. The long brown room was full of gold sunlight and shadows of trees moving quietly. I learnt to say very quickly as the others did, 'offer up all the prayers, works and sufferings of this day.
'

--The Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (reading for contemporary lit class)

Last night when I set my alarm, I set it for Monday instead of Tuesday. On Tuesday I am supposed to get up at 10.00am. I woke up at a quarter to twelve. I missed my morning class and spent the rest of the day in the state of confused bafflement that tends to come from completely screwing up my schedule.

I'll try again tomorrow, I suppose.

Pick up to 15 OTPs.
- Describe them in less than 15 words.
- Have your flist guess the OTP.
- PROFIT.

Here's mine! OTPs from a range of fandoms, new and not-so-new. Mostly slash, but at least one het ship. One that no one but [livejournal.com profile] telyanofcelore  will probably get.

1. He'd trust no one else to put a bullet through his head. Sam/Dean, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] telyanofcelore  on IM
2. He can't resist a man who understands Mersenne primes. Rodney/John - Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] everysecondtues
3. History will sing of what they did together, and forget they once were mere boys. Arthur/Merlin - guessed by [livejournal.com profile] telyanofcelore .
4. Fire and ice: they have nothing in common but the fighting. Sokka/Zuko, guessed much to my surprise by [livejournal.com profile] hanjuuluver

Meme ganked from [livejournal.com profile] poisonivory : Try to write different categories of fic (angst, fluff, UST, etc) in 10 words or less.
Pairings incluse McShep, Sam/Dean, Boostle, and Merlin/Arthur

Angst

"I don't think you should marry her," John spits bitterly.

AU

Sam Winchester’s first case as ADA is against Dean Winchester.

Crackfic

As a five-year-old, Booster is cute - but very loud.

Crossover

“Yes, yes, we’re all doctors of something here,” Rodney grumbles.

Death

Screw demons; hell is Sammy's blood dripping on his hands.

Episode-Related

Arthur didn’t need second thoughts about drinking from the cup.

First Time

Booster whispers against his skin, “Promise you won’t leave again.”

Fluff

John’s first snowball knocks Rodney’s hat right off his head.

Humor

“Tell me about the pool and the jello?” Ted grins.

H/C

"It'll scar," Arthur says as Merlin winces. "You'll be dashing."

Smut
Sheppard looks exquisite, flat on his back and panting.

UST

Ted's ass in spandex is fast becoming a dangerous distraction.

Also! [livejournal.com profile] telyanofcelore  is a fantastic and wonderful person! She sent me books for Christmas! Thank you they are shiny and lovely!

Take the first sentence from the first entry of each month in 2008 and put it in a paragraph:

Ever since I got home from my mom's yesterday I've been having some sort of weird catastrophic internet failure, and I think it's sad that I can't go a day without internet but I NEED MY YAOI.
Time for me to start freaking out about my multitudinous WIP and try to alleviate my guilt by sketching them all out on lj.
This week has been composed of so much FAIL that it cannot be contained in a single week, and has spilled over into the weekend and quite possibly next week as well.
Found this...well, I'm not sure who's journal I saw it on, but I came across it while looking for decent multi-chaptered Captain America/Ironman ficcage (I'm still trying to decide if reading Captain America smut is unpatriotic...).
On the plus side: finally, after two weeks of wrong numbers and answering machines, got ahold of Rena, who is in charge of...something at the library back home, and she said that they didn't have a position open, but if the university/government was paying for it, I could totally work there this summer.
Just got out of my SLE oral final yay!!!!!
I don't know where the idea came from - possibly from having to wear my hair up for work - but I'm wondering suddenly if I want to do something different with my hair.
Awesome music meme I ganked from [profile] estarial!
Things That I Have Done Over Labor Day Weekend:
So I've been very seriously lurking ever since I came back from San Francisco with the plague.
Some days, no matter what you do, are just utterly unfabulous, and today was definitely one of those days.
Okay, so I lied, I'm not ready to get back to emergency last minute porn yet.

So apparently my year consisted of bitching, memes, and gay porn....yeah, that sounds about right.
