Live From Yaoi-Con: Mk 2
Sep. 27th, 2008 06:52 pmPanels I attended today: 3
Yaoi in Western Culture was pretty cool - a lot of talk about the Greeks, and the Athenians vs the Spartans vs Alex the Great, although the veracity of a few of the sources were to be questioned a bit. And then we got into some cool discussion of homosexuality in American pop culture (ie Will and Grace, Queer As Folk) and how it deals with stereotypes of gay culture, and whether homosexuality is /really/ getting to be more widely accepted, or if we just like to think it is. Very informative, and I got a little bit of a reading list for when I get home, definitely (Mary Renault apparently writes very good very slashy historical fiction? Why did I not know this?)
Stargayte was made of win and awesome. Mostly just a meet and greet, talking about who's into what and who ships who and bitching about the cancellation and OMG SG Universe is going to suck so much, that sort of thing. But there was some neat stuff about the actors (ChistopherJudge is apparently the coolest guy ever and ships Jack/Teal'c WTF?) and different fics that are out there and what ships do and don't work, especially the OT3s. And how there really really needs to be SGA doujinshi. Cause there does. And some discussion of why on earth Lorne/Parrish is such a huge pairing when they get all of 30 seconds total screentime together, and why Chuck the Gate Technician=WIN. So much fun!
Yaoi in Comics was all about gay characters and slash in western comics, which if you've read this journal at all the last six months, I am into in a /big/ way. Main comics that were discussed were Young Avengers, Ult!X-Men Colossus/Northstar, and Authority. There was general agreement that YA Billy/Teddy is the cutest thing ever in the history of things being cute and fluffy and adorable (which it IS). I wish the Northstar discussion had gotten a little more into his limitations as a gay character (don't get me wrong, I LOVE Northstar, but he does tend to be written as gay first and an actual character second, which can get frustrating), and nobody else seemed to be up with the most recent issues where JP is dead and then not dead and Peter has his heart ripped out by Wolverine (the whole thing is basically fail). And the guy leading it was a Marvel fan, so DC didn't come up so much. But still pretty neat.
Amount of Money I Spent Today: $120
