A Few Songs That Have Been Making Me Ridonkulously Happy This Week
1. Re: Your Brains by Jonathan Coulton
All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re not unreasonable, I mean, no one’s gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We’re at an impasse here, maybe we should compromise:
If you open up the doors
We’ll all come inside and eat your brains
If you couldn't guess, this is a song about zombies. We need more of those. Why did no one tie me down and make me listen to Jonathan Coulton ages ago? The man is AWESOME. I may be in love ^_^
2. Skullcrusher Mountain by Jonathan Coulton
I’m so into you
But I’m way too smart for you
Even my henchmen think I’m crazy
I’m not surprised that you agree
If you could find some way to be
A little bit less afraid of me
You’d see the voices that control me from inside my head
Say I shouldn’t kill you yet
The anthem of every supervillain who has ever dragged the heroine back to his mountain lair surrounded by lava for a romantic dinner. I am sure that this is a fandom song, but gods if I know which fandom. It's driving me a bit mad.
3. IKEA by Jonathan Coulton
Ikea: just some oak and some pine and a handful of Norsemen
Ikea: selling furniture for college kids and divorced men
Everyone has a home
But if you don’t have a home you can buy one there
This song had me at the handful of Norsemen. *giggles* And it has a line about Thor, which is brain-breaking, as I picture the Marvel character. And Avengers! Thor building cheap particle-board furniture=EPIC WIN.
4. The Christians And The Pagans by Dar Williams
So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table
Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able
Lighting trees in darkness, learning new ways from the old, and
Making sense of history and drawing warmth out of the cold
This is just a wonderful fuzzy happy Christmas/Solstice song. With all the vitriol that's been (understandably) floating around since Prop 8 was passed, it's nice to remember that there is common ground and acceptance to be found.
5. Into The Fire by Escape Key
Into the fire lies the path that I must tread
For I swear I'll pull her from the flames or burn there in her stead
Her gentle rest I could have borne, but now the price I know
Into the beast's eternal grip I cannot let her go
HAVE I MENTIONED RECENTLY HOW MUCH I LOVE MICHELLE DOCKREY'S VOICE? Because I do, y'all. This is a sort -of retelling of the Orpheus myth, but a little more Satan than Hades, and the singer doesn't want to bring his love back to life as much as keep her from burning in hell. Pretty AND creepy.
6. Let's Do Everything For The First Time Forever by Of Montreal
Will you kiss me again so I can pretend
We're kissing for the first time?
Because when we kissed for the first time
I was distracted
I couldn't believe it was true
That I was truly, really, finally kissing you
Hee! They are just such a sweet band, with a really nifty, funky sound. The singer's voice takes some getting used to, but it's all so fun. And I do not understand half this song, but it's just a nice change to have a happy "you're amazing and I love you" song rather than another "we were fucked up/why did you leeeeeave me" song.
