This Is Not A Productive Use Of My Time
Dec. 12th, 2008 12:14 amSo it has occurred to me lately (I think because of all the Supernatural watching that I've been doing) that I have some really distinct types: there are a couple of character archetypes that I tend to fixate on, that either draw me into a series or, once I've gotten into a series, become my favorite characters. Of the male characters I'm really obsessively into, about 95% percent seem to fall into one of the following categories:
Now I'm kinda curious about what kind of characters catch other people's attention
- The sweet, innocent, naive geeky guy. He's usually younger than the rest of the group, or at least smaller. He acts younger, too. He means well and he tries hard, but he screws up because he doesn't quite know what he's doing. He blushes when sex comes up, even if he isn't a virgin. You want to grab him, ruffle his hair, and give him a big hug. Examples from my fandoms include Bart/Impulse, Nate from Shadow of the Templar, and sort of Simon and Ianto from Torchwood.
- The brash, arrogant, self-absorbed asshole who jerkishness is a thin cover for some deep-seated insecurity and self-esteem issues. This is by far the bigger category, and includes a lot of my favorite characters EVER. Dean from Supernatural, Booster Gold, Tony Stark, John Sheppard from SGA, Arthur from Merlin, Owen and Jack from Torchwood - and these are just the ones I can think of from what I've watched/read this /week/. It also includes some of my original characters: Jake is definitely one of these, as well as Madric, and to a lesser extent Damien. I rock this type.
