So Why We Just Move Into The Other Room
Jan. 8th, 2009 11:55 pmFirst day back at work after winter break and astonishingly enough I still don't hate my job. Got embarrassing, geekily excited when I called John Sheppard. YES, JOHN SHEPPARD ATTENDED STANFORD. NO REALLY. Although it probably wasn't our sexy awesome gay Shep since he graduated in the 60s, but still. *grins* And I got a bunch of writing done. Once
telyanofcelore gets a chance to go over it, I'll post the short bit I wrote for my fiction class, loosely titled "How To Be A Doctor Whovian."
And now, a music post, for Lo I Have New Music!
1. The Sun Is A Mass Of Incandescent Gas by They Might Be Giants
The sun is a mass of incandescent gas
a giant nuclear furnace
where hydrogen is turned into helium
at a temperture of millions of degrees
Fuck you,
hanjuuluver . I have not been able to get this out of my head since the last time I saw you.
2. I'd Rather Dance With You by Kings of Convenience
Even if I could hear what you said
I doubt my reply would be interesting for you to hear
Because I haven't read a single book in years
And the only film I saw, I didn't like it at all
I got this off the Tony Stark's Sexual History fanmix (just...don't ask), and heeeee it is such a perfect Tony song. Also works pretty well as a Bruce Wayne song - any rich playboy type who uses charm and sex to keep from having to cope with a real relationship.
3. Not A Virgin by Poe
I just thought you should know
Darlin', I been around
Yeah, I've been up and down your block
In fact, I have been all over town
Down by the lake
And underneath the table in my living room
Also from the Tony's sex life mix, this song is horribly amusing and just a little bit filthy. And a fantastic Jack Harkness song. Since he's never been in possession of that particular virtue.
4. My Secret Origin by Ookla The Mok
And after all this time
it's probably not gonna turn out
that I'm the super-powered heir
to a world that isn't there anymore.
But somebody told me I was special.
Somebody told me that I could be
anything I wanted to be.
Ookla's sort of a guilty pleasure, since he guitar work is singularly unimpressive and his voice isn't anything to write home about, but his songs still fill me with an unholy glee. And this one's silly, but still makes me a little sad, because we're never as special as we want to be.
5. What About Us by John Barrowman
So, What about us?
What about love?
What about saying
That we'll never give up?
Don't want to blame ya
But we're in danger
So... What about us?
No one ever accused JB of being subtle or understated in any way. But there's room in my life for a certain amount of melodramatic romantic grandstanding, especially since he really can belt them out with style.
6. Mordred's Lullaby by Heather Dale
Guileless son,
Your spirit will hate her
The flower who married my brother the traitor
And you will expose his puppet behaviour
For you are the proof of how he betrayed her
I have a huuuuge Mordred and Morgana kink - there's something so captivatingly tragic in their stories, and how they are betrayed by the ideals of Arthur's reign. This song is pretty and CREEPY.
7. The Ballad Of Barry Allen by Jim's Big Ego
And I'm there before you know it
I'll be gone before you see me
And I'd like to get to know you
But you're talking much too slowly
And I know you wanna thank me
But I never stick around
Because time keeps dragging on
I never thought of the Flash, especially the Barry Allen Flash, as a particularly tragic character, but I think this song changed my mind. Also, it always makes me think of Bart, and that guarantees loads of tears.
8. City Hall by Vienna Teng
oh, me and my baby driving down
to a hilly seaside town in the rainfall
oh, me and my baby stand in line
you've never seen a sight so fine
as the love that's gonna shine
at city hall
Proof that Stanford students win hard at everything ever. This song is about gay marriage, and it is absolutely exquisite, heart-wrenchingly so. This stanza just breaks my heart:
10 years waiting for this moment of fate
when we say the words and sign our names
if they take it away again someday
this beautiful thing won't change
Next week, I'll do an All Jonathan Coulton All The Time music post. Since I'm going to see him in concert and all. XD
