scans_daily has filled with me with an unhealthy love of Apollo/Midnighter. It's like Batman and Superman, if Batman and Superman kicked people's heads off. And were married. (okay, the kicking heads off is mostly Midnighter, but Apollo blows things up by looking at them *beams*). And yes, I do think that Apollo tops. Don't ask me why. He just does, okay?
HOW CAN THE AUTHORITY BE SO AWESOME? I mean, it has Mindy and Apollo being gay and sweet and ass-kicking, of course. But it also has Jenny Sparks, who manages to be a bad-ass awesome comics girl despite barely having any boobs and is just generally snarky and shouty and chain-smoking and so made of WIN. And Jack Hawksmoor, king of cities guy, who I possibly have a weird inexplicable crush on? (HE'S HOT OKAY) And the Engineer and the fucked-up Doctor guy and the girl with the wings...And the art is gorgeous (APOLLO IS STILL PRETTY YAY) and the writing is great and really /funny/ which I love ("Hello." "Welcome to Los Angelos." "We're here to hit you.").
It makes me kind of sad. I'm still on the Warren Ellis stuff, and from everything I've heard, the comic isn't nearly as good once he goes off it. Woe. But for now, AWESOME COMIC IS AWESOME.
ETA: Grrrrr the Quitely art on the Mark Millar run is so fucking ugly. Everyone's so beefy and huge, it's just gross. GAH, DO NOT WANT. GIVE ME BACK PRETTY APOLLO AND GANGLY JACK! It's especially annoying because there's a great Mindy/Apollo scene that would be totally moving if it weren't for the fact that I want to stab my eyes out so I don't have to look at the horrible horrible art.
Also, Millar: your Avengers pastiche is the exact opposite of subtle. You get no love from me for that. Especially not for rape-happy Captain America clone. You get a few points back for the scene between Midnighter and Iron Man clone, though.
