Why no, I'm not procrastinating on my religions paper, why do you ask?

Also, [personal profile] colourofsaying is to blame for at least half of this.

How Benton Fraser and Jack Harkness Met, Saved The Day, and Founded Torchwood Chicago (a summary of a story that, god help us, will never be written)

So: in pursuit of an alien threat, Torchwood Three finds themselves in the great city of Chicago, as happens on occasion. Their first day in the city, after they've done a bit of sight-seeing and Gwen's gotten a hot-dog, they split up to start tracking down leads to the alien mafia boss they suspect is smuggling drugs into the city in deep-dish pizzas. But, a complication! Ianto, by chance, walks past the Canadian consulate, where he sees, in profile, a man who bears a striking resemblance to one Jack Harkness. Only seeing him at a glance and thinking it's Jack playing dress-up, Ianto takes the opportunity to surprise!snog his boyfriend.

Which is when Ray V and Ray K jump out to menace this bloody strange Welshman for making out with Fraser, who, since he is still on duty, is still standing there but is now turning a fetching shade of pink. Ianto attempts to explain himself, but the Rays won't hear it and are about to well and truly kick his ass for inappropriate Mountie molesting.

Enter Jack, with quite the fanfare. And the immediate suggestion of an orgy to soothe everyone's tempers. Never let it be said Jack is not a man with a plan! But that's until he gets a good look at Fraser. Who does in fact look...very...familiar...

"You wouldn't happen to be Canadian, would you?" he asks. "And your mother never mentioned a dashing stranger who gave her the night of her life?"

Because of course the Doctor sat him down one day and gave him a very firm lecture, with hand gestures, about the importance of Safe Sex and Responsibility and the Time Line and not being your own great-grandfather and after that Jack was Very Very Careful, but back in the Time Agency, Jack was a bit more cavelier. And very free in his affections. And there was that one time he was tracking down a dangerous time criminal who fled to rural Canada, circa 1960, and in the course of duty he had no choice but to sleep with that very lovely Canadian housewife, really...

So Jack is sizing up his new son's boyfriends and their dress sense and considering how best to instill Harkness Family Values in him, while Fraser shares Significant Glances with Ianto and has a very quiet, calm mental breakdown. Mostly at the thought of Harkness Family Values, which is mainly a list of who is acceptable to sleep with (everyone) and when it acceptable to sleep with them (always). Which do not square well with the values he learned from Daddy Fraser, which were more along the lines of "Don't do anything with a girl (or a boy, he is Canadian) before you marry her" and "Always clean and oil your guns before you go hunting caribou."

Luckily, before things can get any more awkward, something very dramatically blows up. And somehow, presumably because this is Fraser and he has a knack for this sort of thing, he and the Rays end up in the sewers with Torchwood 3, hunting down aliens who are using them as both a hide-out and a place to stage the alien gang war being fought oer the valuable turf of Chicago.

Jack is grateful for the help - always a fan of liasing with the locals, our Jack - and also for the chance to bond with his new-found son. Because Jack is desperately eager to get to know him and have Fraser like him. He's got a lot of lost time to make up for, after all, and he's got all that Death of Loved Ones guilt he's dragging around. He is trying so hard (and it is so awkward) to be friends, to be a good fatherly influence, anything really. In fact, he really wants to take Fraser home with him.

Ianto does not approve of this plan. Partly because home is a small hotel room he intends to make very good use of that night, but mostly because he knows Jack is like a small child who wants a puppy. Sure he loves it, sure he says he'll take care of it, but Ianto knows he'll be the one who has to feed it and take it for walks and make sure it doesn't get eaten by aliens. Also Jack has enough people to worry over back in Cardiff, and it probably wouldn't be the best thing for Fraser to uproot him and throw him into a new city, let alone a new city with a Rift, and bringing his boyfriends along would undoubtedly present a problem. So Ianto is trying to talk a not-that-reasonable Jack out of this, without sounding like he doesn't want Jack to connect with his son.

Meanwhile, Fraser is having a bit of an identity crisis. If the man he grew up wasn't his father, and Jack is, what does that mean? Is he still Benton Fraser? Whose code should he follow, whose values should he be loyal to? The man who raised him, who says that blood's important, or the man whose blood he carries? Does his reputation as his father's son mean anything anymore? Are his memories of his father tainted now by this revelation? How can be certain of his father's love? Should he leave Canada and try to become this other man's son? But wouldn't that be mocking the man who raised him, or at least had his grandparents raise him? All these are very serious questions!

Luckily, he has his boyfriends Ray and Ray there, to reassure him that he is still the man they fell in love with and give blowjobs to on a regular basis, no matter what his DNA is, and that everything they have been through together, all the times he has saved them and emabarrassed them and had sex with them still counts. Knowing their feelings for him will never change, even if his father is really a bisexual  time-travelling immortal manwhore and not a Mountie, goes a long way to making him feel better.

And then of course his father's ghost shows up to tell him that he always suspected Fraser wasn't actually his child, but since he also knew there wasn't a chance in hell Jack was coming back, he decided it didn't matter and would raise him as his son anyway. The lack of blood between them, unfortunate as it is, doesn't mean he loved him any less, or was any less proud of him.

Somewhere along the way, he and Jack also sit down and have a very awkward father-son talk, so that Jack can explain to him that he didn't abandon Fraser and his mother. He didn't know about Fraser - but even if he had known, Fraser was better off without Jack in his life, because he was a very different man now than he was then - 100 odd years will do that to you - and the person he was then wasn't anywhere near mentally or emotionally together enough to have a kid. But he still cares about him, and he still wants to do right by him now. Afterward, Ianto quietly takes him aside and tells him that Jack has this effect on everyone, really, this way of worming his way into your life and turning it completely upside down, but he does mean well, and sometimes it's quite worth it. And if he ever needs anything, here's Ianto's phone number, feel free to call.

Somewhere in the midst of all this mucky personal stuff (come on, you know you watch Torchwood to see everyone have angst and sexual tension and then shag), they have a shoot-out with the alien drug lords in the middle of a crowded public place. Ianto gets a bit nicked (giving Jack the opportunity to fuss over him), Jack dies a time or two, and the Hat is critically wounded but with some daring stitchery lives to cover Fraser's head another day. The alien drug lords are arrested and sent off in the custody of the Intergalactic Drug Cops, much to everyone's relief. Although Jack would have liked to shoot a few more of them.

Alien threat behind them but with the possibility of more looming in the future, Jack uses his ultimate authority as head of Torchwood to authorize the creation of a new branch, Torchwood 5, aka Torchwood Chicago, and place one Benton Fraser in charge of it. Mostly because it gives him a good reason to stay in touch with his son and get to know him better, but also because it is obvious to him that Fraser has a gift for attracting the dangerous and bizarre, which, along with a tragic backstory, is one of the most important qualifications for gaining employment with Torchwood. Ianto gets their authorization papers through the consulate, along with the paperwork for funding, acquisition of cool alien tech, and the hiring of a few specialists to help them get started. Them being Fraser and the Rays, who are his Official Police Liasons.

And thus the story ends with Fraser and his boyfriends and Jack and his boyfriend having hot, hot, celebratory 'we saved the day' sex, although not all together.
