Guys, I think I may have just passed into one of the last remaining bastions of unexplored geekdom for me. That's right. I just joined a table-top gaming group. I DON'T EVEN KNOW OKAY.
All right, hyperbole aside, I am actually pretty excited about this. My friend L has been playing with this group for a while now, and she mentioned last week that they were just finishing up the steampunk game they've been doing all year and were about to do an intro session for a new game, and she'd really like me to come check it out. Cue the anxiety freakout, because OMG LEAVING THE HOUSE. OMG TALKING TO STRANGERS. OMG PERFORMATIVE GAME I'VE NEVER PLAYED BEFORE. WHAT WILL I DOOOOOO?
But eventually I sucked it up and made it out the door, and I'm glad that I did, because I think I'm going to enjoy this. L's gaming group is all quite nice - rather older than I am, but that seems like less of a deal than us skewing in the same geek curve, and judging by the movie shelves and the chocobo plushie I'm pretty sure that we do. No actual playing today, just a mini-game about being trapped in an elevator and then some long discussion about the game dynamics and world setting. It's a cyberpunk game (I think the book is called Eclipse Phase), so there should be some interesting possibilities there. I'm working on a couple of character ideas right now, although I need to go through the manual more thoroughly. And hopefully I won't be the only total noob for long, because one of the other people in the group was talking about bringing a friend who hadn't played before. I'm still kind of nervous about getting used to the game mechanics and all, but I think I'm looking forward to next week.
