The Pandorica Opens
Jun. 19th, 2010 09:50 pmWell, I've been a bit remiss in doing my Doctor Who episode posts the last few weeks, haven't I? Luckily, I got my shit together just in time for Doctor Who: If You Didn't Notice This Is The Finale Two-Parter! Which was...well:
1. RORY OMG RORY I MISSED YOU RORY WAIT WHY ARE YOU A ROBOT NOW ROOOOOORYYYY. Okay, hands up, who didn't think Rory would be back for the finale? Anyone? Bueller? And okay, I know he's an auton, but I can totally imagine the Rory we saw earlier in the season - the one who researched quantum physics to understand Amy's Doctor - falling into ancient Rome and ending up a legion leader, because he is just that awesome and smart. And his arc went from silly (I died and turned into a Roman, it's very distracting!) to completely heart-breaking so fast - the Doctor's long, rambling speech before he noticed Rory was brilliant, and then Rory's disbelief that Amy could have forgotten him, and then Amy...I LOVE YOU RORY EVEN WHEN YOU ARE MADE OF PLASTIC.
2. Karen Gillan knocked this episode out of the park, and I want Amy to marry me. DON'T MESS WITH AMY CYBERMEN SHE WILL BASH YOUR HEADS INTO THE FUCKING WALL. Seriously, how is she so awesome all the time? But not invincible, obviously. I thought Karen hit just the right note of fear mixed with anger in the scene with Rory where she starts crying - I mean, how terrifying would it be, really, to react that emotionally to a person you're sure you've never met before? SO AMY'S GOING TO BE JUST FINE, RIGHT? RIGHT.
3. I think a lot of episodes this season have suffered plot-wise, either from being, you know, kind of dumb, or just badly paced. This episode was not one of them. This was a lot more like the beginning of the season, when I couldn't bring myself to look away from the screen for a second because everything was going so fast. RTD had a tendency to set up big epic two-parters that fell flat on their resolution (for example, The Last of the Time Lords - as a Doctor/Master shipper I kind of love it on a purely emotional level, but the ending depends on a completely absurd deus ex machina that still kind of annoys me when I think about it), so I'm hoping Moffat will do better. This episode is a fantastic set-up - if he pulls it off, and I honestly think he can - next week is going to be EPIC.
Also, this episode wins a prize for Most Disturbing Use of Silence As A Sound Effect. Wow.
4. "If something can be remembered, it can come back." OW MY HEART.
5. First off: who else but the Doctor would try to fight off a sky-full of alien ships by standing in the middle of fucking Stonehenge, shouting into a microphone and telling them all to go to their rooms and think about what they've done? YES SHOUTY!DOCTOR IS MY FAVORITE DOCTOR.
Having the Pandorica be empty was a nice twist on what the season set us up to expect, wasn't it? Although I started to think that the Doctor was going to be in it - or going to be put in it - as soon as he told Amy and River that the Pandorica was made to hold the worst terror of the universe, the man who showed up on untold worlds to leave havoc and destruction and death in his wake. It's a fairly...pessimistic view of what the Doctor does, but not inaccurate, really. It's a nifty paradox, though - the universe cracks because the TARDIS explodes, the TARDIS explodes because the Doctor's not on it, the Doctor is in the Pandorica to stop him from destroying the universe by blowing up the TARDIS. Nice.
And my god, his face as the episode ended and they shut the door on him. *shivers*
