“I didn’t know Tosh played the flute,” Jack says offhand, holding up the thick stack of music books he’d found on the table by the window. “Did you know that? I didn’t know that.”

“She just picked it up recently, sir.” Ianto thumbs through one of the books, sees the pages creased by heavy use, sees the circled and underlined notes, the margins filled with Tosh’s incomprehensible notes. He hadn’t been paying attention when she’d mentioned that she was teaching herself to play, how simple it was when one realized the mathematics underlying it. But he can see her now, sitting by the window in a wash of moonlight, eyes closed as she lets the clear, pure pattern of the music ease the memories of Torchwood and whatever they’d done that day.

Jack takes the book from his hands and places in the box with the others, seals the box with heavy brown tape and scrawls ‘Toshiko Sato – Torchwood Three Agent’ across the side in black pen before placing it beside the door with the rest.
