Downloaded the UK version of Queer As Folk this weekend (Oh, Russell T Davies, you drive me to shameless things) and watched almost all of the first series tonight. Still trying to decide what I think of it. On the one hand, Aidan Gillen is a lovely piece of lovely, and it's certainly well-produced/written/acted. And I'm absolutely not opposed to the gratuitous snogging and mansex.

On the other hand, I kind of hate all of the characters, like, a lot. They're /interesting/, realistic (ish) characters, it's just that they're all really awful people. Except for maybe Vince, he's a bit of adorkable, but he's still a total idiot. And Stuart is just such a blatant user and creep - the scene where Nathan's dad goes after him for having sex with Nathan, and then he acts all noble afterward like he dragged Nathan out of this horrible homophobic situation - dude. You are 29, and you fucked a 15 year old virgin. You DO NOT have the moral high ground here. The dad is kind of in the right in hating your guts, considering that in the eyes of the law you raped his son (the lack to which anyone seems squicked by what Stuart did rather squicks me, I admit). And Nathan I just want to smack repeatedly for being a naive, arrogant, manipulative little twit. The amount of casual drug use makes me a little uncomfortable, as well. So yeah, I don't know.

I'm still going to watch all the rest of it though.

A few years ago--sophomore year of high school, actually--I tried watching the U.S. version of QaF. I couldn't get past the fact that Justin was an asshole, even though everyone insists that he's adorable and endearing. The only character I even remotely liked was Michael. I think if I'd been attracted to any of them I might've been able to bear through it, but to this day, it's one of the only t.v. shows I haven't gotten addicted to (I have an addictive personality).

Isn't there also a good deal of drug use in the U.S. version? I didn't see that much, but I remember a lot of cocaine, XD

I think Michael in the US version is the same as Vince in the UK version? So proof that he is the only remotely tolerable person!

And yes, there is lots and lots of drug use in both - UK has a character die of a bad reaction to heroin, US has same character become an addict and then clean up, for example - but mostly it's really casual, which squicks me for some reason.
