So, Batman died today in Final Crisis. He got eye-lasered by Darkseid after fatally shooting him. How 'bout that?

Okay, there seems to be some debate in comments over what Omega Sanction vs Omega Beam (or whatever, I don't even know) does, and whether he's really dead or just trapped in a series of alternate horrible lives. But he looks pretty damn bad, is the point.

*yawn* Color me unimpressed. And I am so not looking forward to the Battle For The Cowl. Like, I know it is going to end up with Bats!Dick, and even though it makes sense, I really, really hate it.

This is just my extremely biased opinion, but I can't see Dick EVER becoming Batman without it being incredibly psychologically damaging to him. I think that Bruce is too much of a father figure to him, too much of a role model, that he has too much invested in this idea of Bruce as the perfect unassailable hero. Even when he is able to come to terms with Bruce's flaws and failures, I think he still has that ideal in the back of his head. So I think trying to be Batman would wreck him - he would spend the rest of his life trying to live up to the standard set by the one person he looks up to the most (excluding his parents, obviously), and failing. Because how can he not fail to be Bruce? Anyone would. But he would hate himself for it. Batman means too much to Dick for him to ever take up the cowl in a way that would not make me worry for his sanity.

Honestly, I think the only one who could take on the mantle is Tim. Dick is out. Jason is out by virtue of being bugfuck crazy. Barbara would need to not be a paraplegic. Damien is a useless little snot. I...don't know enough about the current Batwoman, sorry. I can't imagine Steph wanting to be Batman to begin with (side note: why yes the Batfamily is enormous).

I see Tim as the most like Batman in style, and he's working his way up in the crazy department, poor boy. He's got that very analytical, detective-type mindset that the role requires. And I think he could pull it off without losing it, anymore than he already has, anyway. Batman is his mentor, and he holds himself to that standard, but not the way Dick does. It's a much more professional than familial relationship, and that makes such a huge difference.

I...spend way too much time thinking about this. Especially considering how much I really don't care at all about Batman in any way.

PS: DEAR COMICS, PLEASE STOP KILLING OFF CHARACTERS. NONE OF THE FANS TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY ANYMORE.
