masterofmidgets: (lazy sunday)
Oh internets, once again I am back in the glorious ranks of the unemployed!

Not that this is in any way surprising, since I knew when I joined up that the firm just needed me for this one project, which was due on Friday last week - not that we finished it on Friday, Dudeboss being the kind of procrastinating engineer that he is, but we did our best. And they actually found several days worth of extra work for me to do after that, but finally yesterday we had to admit that there just wasn't enough to do to justify me coming in. They have my number in case any more crises come up like this one, but for now, I am Not Working.

I interviewed for this job about two days after I got back from California, so I never really got the time off I had hoped for between finishing school and starting working. So that's what I'm doing now! I think this job gave me enough padding, money-wise, that I can stand to wait at least a couple of extra days before I start job hunting in earnest next week.

And I have to admit, I do like this lazy free time thing. Today I baked bread and read pervy manga and watched Deathly Hallows Part 1 for the first time. And I've been making [personal profile] colourofsaying help me plot out ridiculous ideas for fanfics I will never write. Like the Wicked/FF7 fusion where Cloud is Elphaba, Zack is Glinda, and Sephiroth is Fiyero. Or the one where Zack is the inventor of the Super Shinra SOLDIER Special Duluxe Sandwich, and Cloud has permission to shoot anything that comes out of his fridge on sight. Or the one where Zuko, Cloud, and Martin Crieff are in a support group seminar for angsty, socially awkward failbenders where they do self-esteem exercises and learn how to accept hugs and eat cookies.

(Look, I spent three days at work proofing site-specific nuclear hazard safety guides with no livejournal and a lot of musical theater on my pandora station. This is the kind of thing my brain does when I treat it like that.)

And this weekend there shall be Deathly Hallows 2 and story time and birthday cake. :)

I feel bad for not updating as much lately (or only updating when I have something Doctor Who related to talk about...), but ever since I got home my life's been in a majorly low gear. Even when I do stuff, it's supremely boring stuff. Yesterday I went to my grandma's and spent the better part of the afternoon scrubbing the kitchen cabinets for her, and then used part of the money she paid me to buy a super-cute pair of Blue Beetle earrings. Today I got up just in time to watch the Argentina-Greece match (YAY ARGENTINA), baked a loaf of bread, and made dinner. I didn't actually put pants on until after 5.00pm. Not exactly riveting, right?

I'm getting to the point of wishing something would catch on fire, just because it would make this damn town less mind-numbingly boring. Except that would probably make things hotter, and it's already obscenely close to 100 degrees here. *sighs* There's just no way to turn a summer exiled in the desert into a win.

At least I'm getting a lot of cooking and baking practice in my exile. So in lieu of actual interesting content, here's an adapted recipe for rosemary chicken that turned out quite good tonight.

Ingredients

2 T olive oil
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1/2 inch strips
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3-4 sprigs of rosemary, coarsely chopped (original recipe called for 6 green onions. This is better.)
4 T Marsala wine (or any dry white wine - I used pinot grigio because that's what we had)
2 T lemon juice
salt and pepper to taste (we didn't need any)

Heat a large frying pan. Add the oil, chicken, garlic, and rosemary and sauté over high heat until the chicken in lightly browned and tender (keep a close eye, the rosemary burns quick). Remove from the pan. Add the wine and lemon juice to the pan and reduce for a minute or so. Return the chicken to the hot pan, and add salt and pepper if you want. Serve immediately. We had it with bowtie pasta in a cheese sauce and snap peas cooked with lemon and garlic - most excellent light dinner.

Some Things, In No Particular Order
  • Still job-hunting. I'm waiting for more information from the Jobs Initiative people on when the orientation/workshop is. Yesterday I applied for a job at Borders, waiting to hear from them. Looking for other stuff and refusing to be stressed about it. Although I may have to kill my entire family, who are masters of meddling and unsolicited advice and are driving me crazy.
  • Did Father's Day dinner at my grandma and grandpa's on Sunday, which was pleasant. My uncle's wife is a really neat person, even though she's still adjusting to the States, and my baby cousin is the cutest toddler in the history of the universe. He's three so he spent the entire evening bouncing off the walls, but he's still cute.
  • Apparently two of my great-great-uncles on my dad's side were presidents of El Salvador. Before they got assassinated. No, I don't know which ones, but still pretty neat.
  • I'm halfway through the second season of Dexter, the third season of Teen Titans, and the fourth season of Supernatural. So, you know, I've been watching a fuckton of television, obviously.
  • I know I've been badly spoiled by the SGA and SPN fandoms, which have a pretty high proportion of sheer brilliant crack and kinky fucks, respectively, but NCIS has a terrible fandom. I cannot believe how depressingly hard it is to find good, IC Gibbs/Tony. I've only read like ten fics I actually liked, and most of them were by Nix.
  • My continued inability to do a non-rubbish four-strand braid or a french-braid of any sort is seriously annoying. How hard can it possibly be to braid hair, self?
  • I got nailed by a goathead this afternoon. OWOWOW. For those of you who don't live in the desert, they are also known as puncturevine, they grow everywhere, they shed large, hard-as-rock spiny stickers that are capable of puncturing a bike tire, they FUCKING HURT.
  • I am pretty much about to die of boredom. Whyyyyyyyy can't I find anything to do for more than five minutes?

Oh my god, INTERNET, I MISSED YOU!!!

I have had zero internet access since Tuesday night - Wednesday the guy we are borrowing the broadband modem from needed it back, so I spent my night watching DVDs and making icons. And yesterday and today, I didn't even have my computer, let alone internet, because it was off at the shop getting optimized. It was horrible - no internet, no computer on which to game/read/watch stuff, no books I haven't read a million times because all my stuff was in storage, and to top it all off, they were supposed to come hook up our cable, but they totally and completely failed to do that. IT HAS BEEN A LONG COUPLE DAYS, YOU GUYS.

What I Have Been Doing, In Absence of Internet:

Wednesday: went to the high school with [livejournal.com profile] hanjuuluver . A worrying number of our former teachers are now teaching in prison.  But we hung for ages in the library, and saw Ms Davy, and also Tiny Francesca, so it was awesome. Then we met my mom at Pei Wei, where delicious Thai food was had by all. We went to the bookstore and I bought one of the new Torchwood books, Pack Animals, which was as slashy as all the reviews suggested. And then my mom took us to one of her clients' to play with the miniature horses. Cute!

Thursday: read Pack Animals, which went rather quickly. Waited around for the cable guy to show up and be useless. Then helped my dad set up the TV and spent the whole evening watching Firefly, which were literally the only DVDs I had on me.

Today: [livejournal.com profile] hanjuuluver  responded to my desperate plea for something, anything, to do by dragging me out of the house again, thank her psychotic ass. We got fast food, and then did shopping. I bought the Dark Knight special edition DVD for my dad's Christmas present, a 30 dollar JoAnn's gift card for my mom's, and a copy of Son of a Witch just for me. We also went to the mall, which was unsurprisingly horrifying this time of year. This evening I went with my dad to a hockey game, where we were humiliatingly crushed by Colorado. And now I am catching up on my flist and running scans with my expensive new virus scanner program. Good times!

Don't feel like sleeping yet, since I didn't get up until 3.30 today, so I started making icons. Icon making is harder than it looks, if not as hard as I expected it to be? Hopefully will have a chance to make some more Lost Souls icons once I listen a few more times and decide which bits I like best (but certainly "My bicycle has a bell!" and "You love coffee! Coffee and Jack!"), and some Superbuddies ones once I get some scans where you can read the speech bubbles. *grins*

Icons were made using textures by [livejournal.com profile] yunhe . Pictures and quote are from Stargate: Atlantis and Torchwood: Lost Souls, respectively. Up for grabs, but please comment and credit.
